At the Monument au colonel Charles Veillon, your tour guide shall be waiting with a Signboard.
Start at Saint-Maire Castle, an official Swiss Heritage Site and the Seat of the Council of State of Vaud. The 13th-century structure perched on an ideal vantage point looking over the city’s valley will give you a glimpse into Lausanne’s marvellous military engineering and turbulent medieval history.
Just a stone’s throw away, encounter another stunning building of historical importance: Rumine Palace. The Florentine Renaissance gem dominating the western edge of Lausanne's Old Town witnessed the history-making Treaty of Lausanne. It’s a good idea to come back to the library inside sometime for the largest collection by the Vaud artists!
Right in front of the solemn palace lies the vibrant Riponne Square. Hosting colorful farmers’ markets and enthralling flea markets, the city’s social hub is where you can rub shoulders with locals and watch the busy daily life unfolding. Fun fact: you can still see and hear the river that the square actually covers through a special window on its underground carpark!
Next, it’s time to venture through the Old Town, crowned by the looming Gothic towers of Lausanne Cathedral. You will travel through the eventful history when strolling around the gigantic 11th-century church, marveling at its ornate architectural details and the last remains of the medieval city walls, as well as listening to the dramatic story of the once Catholic stronghold transforming into a Protestant cathedral.
Continue to meander down the 13th-century Escaliers du Marché Staircase, steeply leading to the valley. Boasting a wooden stairway with a cover and a very steep cobbled street running alongside it, this most photographed site offers you picturesque backdrops for souvenir pictures!
At the bottom of the staircase, you’ll arrive at Palud Square, the Old Town’s bustling central crossroads. Here, you can admire the iconic Justice Fountain and take in the charming atmosphere of the surrounding cafés alternating with quaint buildings.
Then, follow Bourg Street, one of Lausanne’s biggest shopping streets lined with numerous elegant boutiques, exquisite galleries, and gourmet restaurants. You will embark on a voyage of delightful window shopping and people-watching through the Flon, the innovative and modern side of Lausanne pulsing with life, day and night.
Finally, escape the bustle and head to the peaceful Montbenon Esplanade Park, stretching over a green hill. Whether you choose to relax in a café or stroll through the park, you'll be treated to one of the most beautiful panoramic vistas sweeping across the nearby Palace of Justice and the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva.
