  Next, make your way to the Alcázar Gate, one of the grand entrances piercing Ávila’s iconic medieval walls. This fairytale-like portal is one of only three gateways that provide access to the top of the formidable ramparts. From here, you can capture postcard-worthy views of the picturesque Mercado Grande Square and admire its most prominent landmark, the Parish Church of Saint Peter the Apostle.

  Take a closer look at the parish’s striking Romanesque exterior. Its façade is distinguished by a beautiful rose window inspired by Cistercian abbey design. The north doorway is particularly impressive: a semicircular arch richly adorned with five archivolts, geometric carvings, and delicate rosettes that showcase the craftsmanship of the period.

  Continue to Ávila Cathedral, located in the square that bears its name within the city walls. This remarkable Gothic structure is uniquely integrated into the defensive walls themselves, blending religious grandeur with military strength. While the cathedral dominates the square, be sure not to miss the elegant historic buildings surrounding it, which add charm and character to the setting.

  Plaza Mercado Chico

  Your next stop is Mercado Chico Square, the beloved heart of walled Ávila and a favorite gathering place for locals. Framed by the Town Hall on one side and the Church of San Juan Bautista on the other, the square offers a beautiful display of historic architecture. The arcaded porticoes shelter quaint shops and cafés, and lively markets often bring the space to life with color and energy.

  From there, head toward Puerta de San Vicente, the principal gateway leading out of the old city. Nearby stands the impressive Palace of Los Verdugo, a refined example of Plateresque architecture. Its elegant façade is adorned with the coat of arms of the influential Águila family, and the palace was declared a National Monument in 1976.

  San Vicente de Ávila

  The tour concludes at the Basilica of San Vicente, one of Ávila’s most treasured landmarks and a designated World Heritage Site. Built on the site of Saint Vincent’s martyrdom, this is the city’s oldest church. Its 12th-century Romanesque portals and portico are masterpieces of sculptural simplicity. Inside, you’ll find one of Spain’s finest Romanesque altarpieces and a crypt dedicated to the saint. Just across the road, the tranquil San Vicente Garden provides a peaceful setting to relax and reflect after your walk.
