Get lost in the fairy-tale book of the Old Town Miltenberg, the enchanting historic quarter where time seems to freeze since the medieval times with storybook-esque half-timbered houses and magnificent historical landmarks such as the 13th-century Würzburg Gate of the Old City Walls guarding the east of Miltenberg, the resilient Main Bridge Gate - the only surviving witness of the medieval Main Gate connecting the New Town and the Old Town, the tranquil 14th-century Jewish Cemetery, Gasthaus zum Riesen – the oldest inn in German, which is said to accommodate many famous historical figures, and last but not least the atmospheric Old Market Square, perfectly summing up the medieval cityscape and vibrant culture of the city.
Next to the tower, your tour guide shall be waiting with a Signboard.
The tour starts at the pastel yellow Würzburg Gate. In contrast to its lovely vintage appearance, the medieval gate which was part of the 13th-century outer ramparts used to serve as an observation deck and a shielded gun platform to defend the vulnerable eastern side of the city.
Then, pass by St. John's Church, perching on the top of a staircase descending to Old Town’s center. The 19th-century Gothic church boasts colorful windows intricately adorned with biblical scenes and a perfect viewpoint where you can capture the emblematic Main Bridge Gate at its full scale without the hustle of heavy traffic.
Continue to join a serene passage along the inner ring of the Old City Walls and encounter a medieval Jewish cemetery nestling beside the walls, adding to the tranquillity and old-world charm of the town.
After that, set foot on the Main Road, lined by fairytale-looking half-timbered buildings among which stands out the 15th-century Gasthaus zum Riesen, Germany’s oldest inn. Legend has it that the beautiful hotel was the stopover of many illustrious guests, including Holy Roman Emperors, King Ludwig of Bavaria, Empress Maria Theresa, Napoleon Bonaparte, and the singer Elvis Presley.
Proceed to stop by the elegant Old Town Hall to examine the markings on its façade indicating the water level of historic floods, some of which are up to the top of its archway!
At the end of the Main Road lies the Old Market Square. The enchanting square stands at the entrance of the Black Quarter, Miltenberg’s oldest part where time seems to freeze with pristine buildings from the late Middle Ages. Bustling cafes and stalls selling traditional foods or local handcrafts offer a chance to watch locals in their daily lives and get immersed in the vibrant culture. Check out the romantic Renaissance centerpiece fountain, the most-loved background for souvenir photos.
At the north side of the square, the 13th-century St. James Church has existed since the early days of Miltenberg. You may get to hear the special bell ringing which coordinates with one of the St. John's Church from the other side of the Main Road!
