Enjoy your holiday to the fullest at Puerto de la Cruz, part of the breathtaking Canary Islands which features majestic volcanic-sand beaches and safe waters, by exploring the most significant landmarks of its charming little Old Town, including the 17th-century San Felipe Castle – the defender of the city against pirates in the old days, the enigmatic volcanic rock of El Peñon del Fraile, and the tranquil religious hub of the 17th-century Church of Our Lady of La Peña de Francia, experiencing the dynamic coastal lifestyle at the favorite meeting point of Charco Square and the colorful Mequinez Street, as well as admiring wonderful natural landscapes at the scenic San Telmo Pier.
at the "Somos Lo Mismo" statue (depicting a human face) at Playa Chica Garden, your tour guide shall be waiting with a Signboard.
Start with the series of beach gardens on the west side of the city. The beautifully laid out green spaces boast a peculiar collection of cacti and succulents of various kinds which seamlessly blend with the calming sea, its black volcanic sand beach, and its peaceful sound, giving the site a special healing and refreshing effect.
Next to the gardens is San Felipe Castle. In fact, it was more of a base station where there is a display of monumental weapons which were used to ward off pirate attacks in the 17th century. Standing on the fortress, anyone seems to hear the echo of the turbulent past of the beautiful city.
Just a stone’s throw away, stop by El Peñon del Fraile, built on a volcanic rock that is the present witness of an ancient eruption and the source of many interesting urban myths since a devout priest gave his wholehearted prayers here. The rock became so famous that it was turned into a structure with a cross and a side stairway for curious visitors.
Then, browse through Mequinez Street, featuring an array of murals with a bust of color on the big walls that captivate any onlooker. The colorful buildings, typical of the architecture of the Canary Islands, perfectly complement and elevate the graffiti paintings to art, each of which communicates a story about the rich coastal culture.
Next, stop by the city’s main meeting point of Charco Square. Its well-shaded park and unique fountain housing a big taro tree add a touch of nature to the lovely square where locals and tourists enjoy hanging out in cozy cafés and restaurants nestling under the tree shades for an escape from the sun heat and to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
Continue to stroll around the historic center of Puerto de la Cruz, dominated by the beautiful 17th-century Church of Our Lady of La Peña de Francia. The religious hub of the city has its own tranquil green square where visitors can get immersed in the calming ambiance.
At the end of the tour, take a walk on the pier at San Telmo Beach, which provides a multi-sensory experience with the sound of waves crashing the rocks, schools of fish trapped in the rock pools when the tide is out, and the refreshing sea smell. In case you are looking for a nice place to relax enjoying the beach views, the neighborhood also has so much to offer.
