Although the excavation of Pompeii began over 250 years ago in 1748, only 45 ha or 111 acres (approx.) of the 66 ha or 160 acres (approx.) have been excavated. During a 2-hour tour private guided tour, your guide will describe the devastation that occurred in 79 A.D. when Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered this thriving empire in 30 feet of volcanic ash and pumice stone. In addition, your guide will educate you on the origins or the area and its prominence during the Roman era. He/she will share with you the interesting facts about the other major catastrophe endured by the Vesuvians 17 years before and the events leading up to August 24, 79 A.D. You will see the temples and the statues of the Roman Gods; the homes of the wealthy with mosaic floors and preserved frescos; the austere homes of the poor; the public baths; the markets.
