The combination of dry fuels from the ongoing drought and low relative humidity will continue to produce an increased fire danger across northeast SC and southeast NC Sunday. Despite winds only expected to gust up to 15-17 mph, the strong winds seen on Saturday have already evaporated the moisture was that was on the ground. Burn bans are now in effect across both of the Carolinas until further notice. Relative humidity values are expected to drop near 35% Sunday afternoon, particularly inland.
Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Please be reminded that a statewide burn ban has been issued by both the SC Forestry Commission and the NC Forest Service. These bans are in effect until further notice. Open burning of any kind is illegal.
* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures around 32 expected. * WHERE...In North Carolina, Bladen, Inland Pender, and Robeson Counties. In South Carolina, Darlington, Dillon, and Marlboro Counties. * WHEN...From 2 AM to 9 AM EDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Patchy areas of frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
