Special Weather Statement issued April 19 at 10:47AM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC

Alexander; Iredell; Davie; Catawba; Rowan; Henderson; Cleveland; Lincoln; Gaston; Mecklenburg; Cabarrus; Union; Caldwell Mountains; Greater Caldwell; Burke Mountains; Greater Burke; McDowell Mountains; Eastern McDowell; Rutherford Mountains; Greater Rutherford; Polk Mountains; Eastern Polk Apr 19, 10:47 AM - Apr 19, 09:00 PM
Severity: Moderate Urgency: Expected

Dry brush and leaf litter are very dry in the North Carolina foothills and Piedmont, even following the minimal rainfall which occurred this morning. Relative humidity will fall below 30 percent this afternoon and winds will continue to gust above 25 mph. Given the dry vegetation, outdoor fires will be able to spread quickly once started, increasing the danger of wildfires. Additionally, Monday will be another very dry day with gusty winds, so expect worsening fire weather conditions across much of North Carolina. A statewide burn ban is in effect for North Carolina.

Severity: Moderate Urgency: Expected

As a cold front moves through the region this morning little if any rain is expected to occur. Humidity values will drop to 15 to 25 percent this afternoon, and northwest winds gusting to 25 to 35 mph, fuels will dry out quickly. This will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires through early evening. Additionally, Monday will be another very dry day with gusty winds, so expect worsening fire weather conditions across all of Central North Carolina. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. A statewide burn ban is in effect for North Carolina.
