From our late arrival after 48 hours of travel - the doors of the taxi were opened, glass of champagne in hand, and we were lead through the charming, glittering lobby by “Moh” and settled in to our room that felt like a cozy sanctuary after the chaos of international travel.
As a travel advisor, I am excited that I have this in my back pocket to present to my clients who appreciate the value of this kind of unpretentious luxury. The hotel is rooted squarely in Amsterdam’s history, and you’ll recognize it by its Dutch Neo-Renaissance exterior. But also, as you enter, you’ll feel and see a harmonious blend of the past and modern times. If you are a patron of the arts and interested in Dutch masters, you will be delighted to see several museum-grade and licensed reproductions hanging throughout the lobby.
You may wonder why there is a portrait of Alfred “Freddy” Heineken near the front desk. The hotel is privately owned by the Heineken family and has been since the 1950’s.
There are several restaurants but since this review is getting a bit long - I’ll just mention Flore because the chef and his team has earned the restaurant 2 Michelin Stars and a Michelin Green Star for sustainability. It. Is. Exquisite.
There. Can you tell that we enjoyed our stay? Thank you, De L’Europe. Hope to see you next year!
With it's location on the Amstel and walking proximity to practically all the sites we visited, the Hotel de L'Europe was the perfect place to call home during our Amsterdam getaway.
We opted for the junior suite to allow for a bit more space. Though the room and bath were spacious we did feel it was a bit dark both in color & lighting it was interior & only had a courtyard view. The room amenities were nice, but other hotels in this category usually offer more than one complimentary water per day.
The staff really make the de L'Europe shine as they work hard to make guests feel welcome and keep the property in top shape. Many thanks to Jordan for your warm welcome & helpful strategies for exploring. Also a huge thanks to Sander & Sabrina from the concierge team for your pre-arrival assistance. Thanks as well to Nita in Marie for your great service at breakfast. Dicky, Dyma, & Guido at Freddy's were friendly and welcoming. Samuel of the Bellman team was also a great resource.
Great location. Super attentive staff. Great breakfast. Beautiful room with elegant bathroom.
Fantastic experience. Luxury hotel with wonderful amenities. Staff eager to assist with any needs. On site restaurants delicious. Fitness center not large but has everything needed. Did not have the opportunity to use the spa services- but next time. Would stay here again without hesitation.
This is a beautiful hotel in an excellent location! The food was excellent and the staff were very helpful and attentive. Reservations are needed at Marie so don’t miss it!
The hotel’s location is central and convenient to shops and restaurants. The hotel is beautiful and Posh customers will enjoy that the suites have butler service. We met our butler upon checking in, but that was the first and last interaction.
Had a top notch dining experience at Flore.
A special shout out to Jordan the excellent bellmen who assisted us upon checking in and out. Jordan’s warmth made it a special experience. Photos include pics taken from a river view suite.

Exceptional Pre-Arrival Service from Sweta
We have stayed at Hotel De L’Europe twice before and loved both experiences, which is why we are so pleased to be returning. Although we have not yet arrived for our upcoming stay, the pre-arrival assistance we have received from Sweta has already been exceptional.
She has been extraordinarily responsive, thorough, and thoughtful throughout the planning process. She patiently answered our questions, helped coordinate arrangements for multiple family members, and paid close attention to the details that will make our stay more comfortable and special.
We are traveling to celebrate two family birthdays, and Sweta has approached every interaction with genuine warmth and care. Her communication has been clear, professional, and highly personalized, and she has made the entire planning process seamless.
Sweta is a wonderful representative of Hotel De L’Europe. We already feel extremely well looked after and are very much looking forward to returning in August.
Gorgeous hotel on the canal in the heart of Amsterdam. Rooms, amenities, service all impeccable
The hotel was excellent overall.
Starting out, we arrived and the hotel staff immediately took our bags to deliver to our rooms. They got us checked in and gave us a tour of the hotel.
Once in the room, Jordan arrived with our bags and gave us some more information about Amsterdam and its history. An amazing introduction to the city.
We ate at the Marie Brasserie that evening. Wonderful views and even more amazing food. The staff was also fantastic.
Overall, we have to come back. It was phenomenal.
De L’Europe Amsterdam is an exceptional hotel in an incredible location, right in the heart of Amsterdam. Our Junior Suite overlooking the river and canals was beautifully appointed, offering stunning views that made our stay even more memorable.
The hotel perfectly blends historic elegance with modern comfort. Despite being a historic property, everything felt fresh, immaculate, and exceptionally well maintained. The marble bathrooms are absolutely gorgeous—classic, timeless, and luxurious.
One of the highlights of our stay was ending each evening at Freddy’s Bar with a cocktail. It has a wonderful atmosphere and was the perfect way to unwind after exploring the city.
What truly sets De L’Europe apart, however, is the staff. Everyone we encountered was warm, welcoming, attentive, and genuinely eager to ensure we had a wonderful stay. Their hospitality made us feel right at home.
A beautiful luxury hotel with timeless charm, outstanding service, and an unbeatable location. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
Hotel exceeded our expectations! Great location for walking Amsterdam. Hotel was immaculate and everyone that works there was so friendly and ready to help. Kelly at the front desk, Mo helping us get situated and giving us a tour of the hotel and Jordan at the front door always with a smile and going the extra mile to help us get where we needed to go. Would definitely recommend and we will be back for sure!
This review is long overdue but sometimes life (cancer!) gets in the way of our good intentions.
My husband and I stayed at Hotel De L’Europe (“HDE”) for the second time last summer and, somehow, it was even better than the first. For both trips the hotel arranged a private car to pick us up from Schiphol, and in both cases the car was luxe and the perfect way to arrive after a long flight. We were greeted by several people including Ed, the Front Desk manager I think, who has worked at HDE for 20+ years (a good sign for any business, imo). It was my birthday and Ed led everyone in signing Happy Birthday in the most amazing voice I’ve heard in a while.
We arrived early and not only was our room ready but we’d been upgraded to a corner suite, and waiting for us were flowers & balloons & champagne & a beautiful (and oh-so-delicious!) birthday cake, courtesy of Sander at the Concierge Desk whom we’d met on our first trip to HDE.
The property is gorgeous and the room incredible – it was hard getting out of the heavenly bed and I could have stayed in that shower all day – but the real star of the show, once again, is the people. Everyone is so genuinely friendly and helpful; we wanted for nothing.
Special shout-outs to our wonderful butlers, Domingo & Timea, to Nieta & Kostas at Brasserie Marie who made breakfast special every day and, of course, to Ed at the front desk and concierge extraordinaire Sander. Thank you all.
We are excited to be returning again at the end of this month. Now that my chemo is over we have a lot to celebrate…and we can’t think of a better place to do it!
De L’Europe Amsterdam is a beautifully maintained, classic Hotel. It is a private hotel owned by the Heineken family. Upon arrival at 9 AM we were greeted warmly and offered coffee. We sat in the chandeliered, upscale lobby to drink it. All staff were courteous as well as helpful. The hotel sits right on a canal and is centrally located. We walked to many places- if not all places we visited. The rooms are posh, but small. The marble bathroom is large and stocked with Dyptique product. The continental breakfast is generous and has a lot of delicious choices. We did not love the lunch menu, but the view of the canal from our table was breathtaking. We noticed that the bar/restaurant at night must be popular as it was well attended. The fitness center had everything we wanted and the gift shop has unique, local and fairly affordable items to purchase. For the type of hotel and amenities, location and staff quality- it is definitely worth the money spent per night.
We stayed at Hotel De L’Europe in Amsterdam for six days in June, and it was a complete delight from start to finish. This is truly one of Europe’s special hotels.
From the moment we arrived, the experience felt personal and refined. We learned that the hotel is still owned by the Freddy Heineken family, and that family-run feeling comes through immediately. It does not feel like part of a large chain; it feels like a very special boutique hotel with history, warmth, and character.
Our driver must have alerted the hotel that we were arriving because the moment we pulled up, two doormen greeted us by name and welcomed us into the hotel. We had booked the beautiful Wolfie Suite, and as we entered, Maria, the butler for the suite section of the hotel, greeted us and offered chilled glasses of champagne.
Before our stay, I had communicated with the hotel about our visit to Amsterdam. I had shared that I grew up in the Netherlands as a child and mentioned how much I enjoyed Dutch licorice. That small detail turned into one of the most memorable touches of the trip. When we entered our room, there was a beautiful little metal box shaped like the hotel, filled with delicious Dutch licorice. It was thoughtful, personal, and a perfect example of the level of care this hotel provides.
The location is outstanding. Our suite looked out over one of Amsterdam’s canals, with a beautiful view of the water, streets, and city life. Just about everything we wanted to see was within walking distance, making the hotel a perfect base for exploring Amsterdam.
The suite itself was ideal for an extended stay. We were on a month-long trip and traveling with a lot of luggage, and the room had plenty of space, closets, and drawers for everything we brought with us. It was elegant, comfortable, and very well designed.
We ate at the Italian restaurant, which was delicious, and we also spent time at Freddy’s Bar, which was great fun. It has a special feeling, especially knowing that Freddy Heineken used to enjoy spending time there when he was at the hotel. We were told that he purchased the hotel as a gift for his wife, and it truly feels like a beautiful expression of love and esteem.
One of the most memorable experiences of our stay was a canal cruise on the Freddy Heineken boat, which Maria, our butler, arranged for us. This was very different from the standard tourist boats that travel the canals. It is a special boat with its own history, including bulletproof glass from the period after Freddy Heineken’s kidnapping, when he was understandably concerned about his safety. It made for a unique and memorable way to experience Amsterdam.
The breakfast buffet was also wonderful and included many Dutch touches that brought back childhood memories for me. Having lived in the Netherlands as a child, I especially enjoyed seeing chocolate “muisjes” or sprinkles, which Americans might think of simply as chocolate sprinkles, but in Holland children often enjoy them on buttered bread or toast at breakfast.
I cannot say enough good things about our experience. The staff, housekeeping, doormen, porters, front desk team, concierge, and butler service were all a delight throughout our stay. Hotel De L’Europe combines elegance, history, location, and deeply personal service in a way that is very rare.
If you want to enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer, I cannot think of a better place to stay.
Reservations Agent Sweta Upadhyay has been the most professional, patient and kind representative of De L’Europe Hotel. They have gone above and beyond to make sure I understand pricing, upgrade fees, taxes, city tax, etc to make sure I knew what I was paying for - don’t ever second guess that they are there to provide the best care with honesty and integrity. Sweta, thank you again for the upgrade to a junior suite. We are looking forward to spending our honeymoon at De L’Europe in September!!
