Great location, close to everything. Unfortunately the air con / heater made a horrible noise and then stopped working entirely, so I was freezing cold on the first night and the room had no spare blanket. The bed was big, clean, and comfortable but only had one actual pillow, and 5 cushions that were too small to use as a pillow. I was given a spare blanket after asking the young man at reception, so my second night was much more pleasant.
The towels were all badly stained, and water leaked in all directions from the bathroom tap.
The Metropolitan Inn is not just bad—it feels deliberately predatory.
From the start, the place was filthy and rundown. The room looked like it hadn’t been properly cleaned in ages, smelled unpleasant, and had worn, sketchy furniture that made the whole stay feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Noise carried through the walls nonstop, making sleep nearly impossible. This place clearly does not care about guest comfort, cleanliness, or basic hospitality.
But the real insult came at checkout.
They demanded a $100 cash deposit, which should have been my first warning. Before leaving, I thoroughly inspected the room. The only “issue” was a tiny amount of makeup residue on the sheets from my girlfriend and a couple towels with light spots—the kind of thing that happens in literally every hotel and normally goes straight into a washing machine. Nothing damaged. Nothing excessive. Nothing that wouldn’t come out with standard laundering.
Despite this, they kept $50 of the deposit.
Charging guests extra for normal, minimal linen use is absurd and feels like a deliberate money grab. Hotels wash sheets and towels as part of their job—this wasn’t vandalism, negligence, or misuse. It was normal human use, and they treated it like a cash opportunity.
Staff showed zero interest in being reasonable or fair. No explanation, no accountability—just took the money and moved on.
There are plenty of budget hotels in Salt Lake City that don’t shake guests down over laundry. Staying here was a mistake, and I strongly recommend avoiding this place unless you enjoy dirty rooms, indifferent staff, and losing money over nonsense.
.
Not happy with this place at all! They charged a $100 deposit, which was a surprise . The first room they gave me was at the very end of an upstairs hallway, next to the stairwell. There were no working lights in that part of the hallway, and on either side of the door, were huge empty spaces that were pitch black. Scary for a solo woman traveling. I didn’t even go in. I asked for another room, which they switched with no hassle. This room had light switches that didn’t work, I found the bedside lamps and discovered that this room was hugely in need of updating. This was not one of the remodeled rooms on the website. Paint was peeling, holes in doors, missing lightbulbs. Bathroom was clean, but very shabby, holes and peeling paint. When I first entered the bathroom , there was Vaseline smeared on the doorknob, and more on the exit door and the tv remote… Gross! Towel rack had been ripped of and replaced without fixing the wall damage. I would not recommend this place at all.
Photos catfish this place, it is dirty
Ass clippers!
The person who sweeps just sweeps things under the bed or behind the night stands. There wasnt anywhere near my bed to plug my phone in. I used two towels to clean my makeup and it costed $35 from the deposit which wasnt a big deal. Other than a few things being dirty, i didnt mind. Overall enjoyed my stay. The staff was kind and insightful. Unfortunately the free breakfast wasnt available at the time..
All in the Hotel was terrible!!!!!!!!!!!
There was a homeless guy sleeping on the floor outside our room and some rodents snooping around trash cans on the first floor. All plumbing is old and rumbling if not to mention the poor condition of the bathroom itself.
Filthy, honestly absolutely disgusting… holes in the calls squeaky floors rat poop an pee on the bed..
The lobby, walkways, elevator were shabby, dirty, smelly and in need of repair, and there were Rats in the hallway! Our room looked clean and smelled fresh, but the shower floor tiles were in such bad shape, we opted not to use the shower.
Room very basic.
Not good outside lighting for parking lot. Motel very old but too. Updated. Elevator is antique but does work.
The room was clean and I think recently remodeled.
The staff was great and they were very understanding and helpful.
Shower head is terrible - missing parts, so water is just shooting out of pipe- impossible to wash hair/etc. Water faucet in bathroom sink also broken, you have to hold it just right to get it to work. Towel rack continued to fall off wall every time we touched it. Toilet ran off and on all night. And , construction in room next door(or maybe below) starting at 8am. We were desperate for somewhere affordable to stay, so stuck it out. But, if you can afford anything else, I would recommend going elsewhere.
Room was cleanish.
the A/C unit was buzzing at a high pitch and had to unplug it. No end table lights, had to use overhead light at doorway entrance. Loud carwash outside window in AM. Room next door under construction at 8 AM to power equipment, banging. Night staff was rude, accusatory, and obnoxious upon arrival (AM was fine).
There was no curtains in most of the rooms. There’s no towels in the rooms to take a shower before you leave. It smelled like fermented pee. I have to shoulder and break into my room to get the door open. The staff barely speaks English and does not offer any discounts or refunds.
It was a good quiet place
The beds were comfortable but-the rooms were in need of repairs.
This is not the gem touted in the property description. Breakfast is not offered due to COVID-19 policy still in effect, rooms are in desperate need of update and/or refresh, including the beds, which I nearly fell off of on one side due to no support under it, receipts are not provided, even when requested, and I have no clue when my deposit will be returned. Yes, it is relatively close to the downtown area but spend the money someplace else.
