I see previous Tripadvisor reviews are old - as of 2021, they all still stand. This place is simply awful. I stayed one night and it was one night too long. This "H * T E L" (broken neon sign outside) has not been updated since what feels like 1955.
Service & standards, furnishing & fittings poor. Professionalism, pride and morale of staff (all 3 of them) is clearly through the floor.
Work takes me to hotels all over the country. This ranks as one of the worst.
The reception at the hotel was poor with recognising my booking and requirements
When I was shown to my room I was told I would need to wait 30 mins for the hot water. I expressed my views and was given a different room.
When I tried to use the shower it was no more than a trickle, I reported it, however it was not fixed nor was I informed that it hadn't been fixed.
I can truely say this is the worst hotel experience I have had
The 1 good thing about the good thing was the food in the restaurant was excellent however the bar was a bit limited with stock
Stayed here for 1 night after visiting friends. Very close to the train station and town center so perfectly located.
Room was small but comfortable and everything I needed.
Stayed here while on a course for work. EXTREMELY dated. Breakfast was poor. Shower in bedroom didn’t work properly. Wouldn’t recommend.
Stayed June 2018 - but it wouldn't let me select this far back.
We stayed here for one night to start our walking holiday. The room was spacious but extremely tired. The decor was dated and old and the room wasn't particularly clean. The owner was friendly but I'm afraid I wouldn't recommend this hotel at £89 a night. It is nothing more than a guest house and needs to do a lot of work to bring it up to acceptable standard.
I stay in different hotels around the uk an a monthly basis and can honestly say that this hotel provides everything you need.
A comfy clean room and bed. A warm welcome. A hearty breakfast. Close to the center. Parking. And quiet.
Ok, it isnt the Hilton or Malmaison, but a million times better than a premier inn or travelodge.
Would definitely stay here again.
The attention of the staff was excellent, they are always willing to help and you feel like you are at home. The hotel is near the town center and the train station, walking distance. The terrace is beautiful, where you could enjoy a wonderful time. Thank you to the staff, hope we could go back there again, Sandra and Jose!
Had one night here, from the moment we walked in I loved it! There are not many hotels left like this anymore, it was full of old fashioned charm. The owner booked us in, he was very nice and helpful. We spent the evening in the very pretty conservatory of the residents bar. In the morning we had breakfast cooked by Andrew and it was delicious! Unfortunately we couldn't manage to eat it all which was a shame as it was so nice and we did try!
The garden looked very pretty but the weather was against us! There is parking at the front of the building and a car park at the back, we were also able to take our dog.
Would love to return.
Stayed recently, pleasantly surprised after reading some negative comments quirky , clean , cosy, good food , great breakfast, 5 min walk from station . Nipped on the high speed I was in St Pancras in 20 min . What’s not to like ? Gets my vote . This is my new go to Hotel.
The immediate reaction on reaching our rooms was that this is a very tired hotel. The plumbing is pretty much out of order, showers cramped with nowhere to place soap or shampoo, and the decor is in serious need of an upgrade. Complaints lead to rooms being changed, which wasn’t a problem as there were plenty of rooms with no-one else staying there. Breakfast was strange in that no cereals or the like were offered but fruit juice arrived and the cooked food was actually ok. However, looking back it was no surprise that the owner wanted our money up front when we arrived, because £110.00 per twin room and £89.00 per single for bed and breakfast was way over the top for the facilities. If you have to stay in Gravesend we suggest you look elsewhere
Not sure where to start.
This hotel has achieved a certain notoriety because of how bad it is. A training course that I have to take every few years insists that we have to stay in this place . It is stuck in the early 80’s.
Rooms are dirty , plumbing erratic with running repairs evident everywhere.
Avoid.
I'm not usually very picky with hotels so long as they do the basics well - clean rooms, a comfortable bed and a decent shower. Sadly, this place leaves a lot to be desired on those points.
At first glance, the Overcliffe looks like a charming old English B&B-style hotel. It's a lovely, welcoming building with plenty of character just outside the town centre. But you soon come to feel it has been badly neglected.
Every surface in my room was coated in a layer of dust. The mattress was desperately uncomfortable with collapsed springs, and the shower was barely a trickle (not much fun on a chilly winter morning). I was staying there to attend a training course with my job and was left exhausted on both days due to a lack of sleep. I asked to change rooms after the first night, but there was little improvement.
I very rarely give poor reviews, but I'm writing this in the hope that things might improve. The staff seem friendly enough and with a bit of love, this place could be really nice. But at the very least it needs a thorough deep clean, some new beds and better bath facilities.
Surprisingly, the cooked breakfast was absolutely delicious. Sadly, that was little consolation.
Had a very warm welcome when we arrived at the front desk. However, the room itself was dated and, unfortunately, not particularly clean. The carpet was badly stained , the windowsills and the bathroom floor were dirty as was the telephone in the room. Im sorry to give such a negative review but the lack of cleanliness was really off putting...
My wife and I stayed there on a Saterday in August having traveled from Bexhill the same day.
We had been invited at short notice to a friends 70th birthday party and chose the Overclife Hotel due to its location and finding most of the other hotels in the area fully booked although we thought at the time of booking the price was rather high considering there was no breakfast included.
The reception area is extremely dated with dreadful dusty stuffed animals which should have rung alarm bells but having paid for the room we had little choice but to stay.
After ringing the reception bell and waiting for two or three minutes our credit card was debited and we were given directions to our room at the top of the building at the back overlooking the car parking area.
The double bed was very comfortable and we both sleeped well but the room it's self was rather depressing ,clean but in need of redecorating with several large water stains on the ceiling and the on suit shower room was much the same, The television reception was very poor and there was only two sachets of coffee and milk.
All in all I think this hotel relies on internet bookings where you are abliged to pay the full amount in you don't cancel twenty four hours before hand and I would be very surprised if many people make a return visit, Never seems to reduce it prices so they must be getting away with it,
The overcliffe hotel is run by only what I can call a family feel. They made us very welcome although we did not have food there the breakfast by all means is huge. Well worth the money which is only £10 each. The only thing I would say if you stay on the top floor you are in the eaves so it is a little low on the ceiling if you have to get out of bed during the night.watch your head!!
this hotel seems to polarise opinion. One thing I can agree on with those who love it is that the staff are very pleasant and attentive. The hotel itself is, sadly, something of a different matter.
The overall impression is quite cozy in some ways but a bit tired and saggy. In need of a refurb and a paint job. My mattress looked and felt like it had been installed at some point in the 90s, the windows were difficult to open and a bit grimy, and there was what appeared to be a large water stain on the ceiling.
When I first got in there the toilet bowl had a brown scum floating on the top of it and the shower at times was so weak that at one point I though I wasn't going to be able to wash my (fairly short) hair. I then made a cup of tea and added milk from the sachets provided to see it floating around in lumps. When I checked the use by date, it was February. I stayed there in September.
The wifi was nominally there, but, at least when I was there, too weak to for any practical use - even for loading text from a website. The TV had a sound problem.
All of this would have been irritating but bearable if this had come at a bargain basement price but it doesn't. It's nearly £90 a night.
I'm normally a fairly generous reviewer but I'm making an exception for this one. My advice is look elsewhere.
Had a wonderful evening meal in Bloomers restaurant. The ambience was lovely, service was excellent and food was divine. What a gem, tucked away in Gravesend.
An excellent wine list and the house wine is highly recommended.
We came for a special occasion and this certainly fit the bill.
All seems like excellent value for money.
I arrived at the hotel with a lovely warm welcome. I found my room ever so cosy and clean. The staff were very attentive and the location is perfect to commute into London, while also having Bluewater down the road! The restaurant is beautifully lit at night, it really was the perfect setting for an evening meal, along with spectacular food.
We travelled from East London to Gravesend by bike along the river Thames - an interesting ride. We found the hotel easily and received a warm welcome. The landlady said we could tie our bikes up at the back of ththe hotel where they would have 24 hour CCTV security😃😃. Rooms were well proportioned, clean and comfortable. The staff were attentive and met all our requests (more towels, shower gel and fresh milk). We were a little surprised that we had to pay and extra £10 each per day for breakfast. The waitress however was very attentive and knew by day 2 that we did like extra coffee and tea!
I needed to book two rooms for when my mum and dad stayed for the wkd. It was my mums birthday and we were looked after really well. The staff couldn't do enough for us and the food was superb 5* standard and the rooms were very clean and the beds were really comfy, we slept like logs ha ha.
The breakfast the next day was very nice, you had a choice of cereals toast and full English breakfast and as much top ups of tea as we wanted.
Brilliant experience all round, would definately come back again.
