Woodland escape set in pretty countryside
Pros:

Very charming and set in peaceful woodland grove right next to the zoo. Slap bang in the middle of prime Hampshire countryside.

Cons:

The bathrooms in particular really need updating!

Great value stay in a convenient location.
Pros:

Large comfortable room. Friendly helpful staff.

Cons:

Air con would have been nice as it was very warm when we stayed but there was a large fan which made it comfortable.

Avoid
Cons:

I would strongly advise people to avoid the Marwell Hotel, Winchester.

From the moment we arrived, the experience was disappointing. The receptionist came across as rude and dismissive, and when I raised several issues during our stay, I felt like I was inconveniencing her rather than being listened to. Despite the number of problems we encountered, my request for a refund was refused without any real attempt to resolve the situation.

I appreciate that we're in the middle of a heatwave, but the rooms are simply not equipped to cope. There is no air conditioning or proper ventilation—just a sliding balcony door. We didn't feel comfortable leaving it open overnight because the balconies are accessible from multiple rooms, with a staircase leading up from the ground floor, so it didn't feel particularly secure.

When I asked if we could move to a cooler room, I was told all the rooms were the same. I then asked if we could have an additional fan, only to be told they only provide one fan per room. That wasn't a practical solution given the conditions.

The room itself had several maintenance and safety issues. The bathroom door lock was fitted on the outside of the door, meaning it couldn't be locked from the inside for privacy, but someone could lock the door from the outside. I also found that the step ladder leading to the top bunk bed was broken and felt unsafe to use, which is unacceptable in a family room.

Breakfast was equally disappointing. The scrambled eggs were extremely watery, the bacon was dry and tough, and the overall selection was poor. To make matters worse, we were left waiting to be seated because there were no staff members in sight.

Overall, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had. The combination of poor customer service, uncomfortable rooms, maintenance issues, and apparent safety concerns made for a thoroughly disappointing stay.

Save your money and stay somewhere else
Pros:

It’s central to where we wanted to go

Cons:

Very dirty and scruffy, breakfast was very tasteless using cheap products,
very limited, food all over the tables, dirty carpets, dirty chairs to sit on
Our room was ok, beds were very comfortable and pillows, but toilet seat was very loose, flush didn’t work and bedside light didn’t work, not very well maintained we did report this, light was fixed and toilet seat tightened but still had problems with flush
Alot of money to pay for two nights with a very insufficient breakfast

Traumatic.
Pros:

Hard to find a positive.

Cons:

Reception staff gave key to my room to other people staying at the hotel - this resulted in two men coming into my bedroom at 2:30am.

Hotel currently in poor repair but recently bought by Marcliffe Hotels - a year of renovations ahead
Pros:

The staff were lovely

Cons:

Very run down facilities.

Pool is permanently out of use - closed for a long term refurbishment. I think it would be more honest to remove it from the description until fixed.

Dinner was grim and overpriced. Breakfast was fine on one day (cold buffet and 5/6 hot options) and then the second day there were only 2 hot options - sausage or egg.

The building was in a generally poor state of repair. Rubbish was piled around the hotel grounds and that was our view from the window.
