We recently returned from a brief stay at The King George (family with 2 rooms) - this was our second stay. I feel badly critiquing because the staff does try hard - but we were somewhat disappointed. The hotel was crowded and the lobby area always felt disorganized. There were check in and check out lines and the staff often seemed disorganized and frazzled. The lobby is grand and nicely appointed - there is always water for the guests. The lobby bar area is very nice too. The breakfast is fantastic - one of the best in Athens with a view of the Acropolis. This did not disappoint! And there is a good gym for anyone wanting / needing this service. The rooms seem old and really needing a face lift (I felt this way when last there 10 years ago) - they are clean and cared for but need to be more contemporary. Our daughter had a single room which was way too small and it's interior window faced the breakfast area! Also our rooms were not available until after 4 pm, which is also unacceptable. The staff was apologetic and offered food credits - which is not helpful when you are there for a brief stay. When we came back through Athens we stayed elsewhere and were happier.
The staff were warm and friendly, the restaurants served delicious food, and our tasting menu experience at Tudor Hall was exceptional. The view of the Acropolis and Parliament at breakfast and dinner can’t be matched. We watched the changing of the guards multiple times from the comfort of the breakfast balcony. Each time we interacted with the staff at this hotel, they provided recommendations to elevate our visit. The housekeeping was diligent and the air conditioning was powerful which helped after the warm climate.
Lovely location, wonderful staff
We received an upgrade but the shower in the room didn’t work properly and the wood floors were full of black scuff marks
The best breakfast !!!
no swimming pool
Sadece konumu
Cok eski bir otel. Klozet kapaklari bile berbat durumda. Yani ismine kapilip bu otele gittik ama pisman olduk. Gece cok gurultu vardi, manzarasi avluya bakiyor. Kahvaltisi eh iste. Asiri pahali bi otel ama karsiligi sifir
It was our first time visiting Athens, so I selected this hotel for its location to the various historical sites. The location was great and we were able to walk to the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Ancient agora, Temple of Hephaestus, Stoa of Attalos, and other historical sites.
As a lifetime Gold Elite member, I opted to include the breakfast buffet with our room reservation and was pleased with the extensive breakfast buffet. The restaurant is on the 7th floor with a view of the Acropolis. We also enjoyed a glass of wine in the 1st floor lobby bar.
The hotel is described as an elegant and luxury hotel. Unfortunately, I didn’t get an upgrade, and we were very disappointed with our “Classic” guest room on the 8th floor for the following reasons:
1) The cushions on the couch need to be replaced because the foam inside has become so compressed, making sitting on the couch really uncomfortable (see photo).
2) The desk chair is badly stained and needs to be cleaned or replaced.
3) The bathroom had a very large bathtub with a shower attachment. When taking a shower, water leaked all over the marble floor because the glass panel was not sealed properly. We used lots of towels to mop up the water.
4) The thermostat didn’t work and the room was very warm.
5) The built-in cabinets and closets need to be repainted. It appears that only primer paint was used.
The only positives: we were able to check into our room early at 10:30am and a comfortable king-size mattress. Room 814K definitely needs to be remodeled and updated.
Great stay! Our room was already good (Grand Suite) and they upgraded to the Executive Acropolis Suite - what a room! Views were great. Service was great. Bed and other amenities were comfortable.
Location, Amenities and beautiful classic old building.
We stayed in a standard classic bedroom, nothing special. The bed is extremely comfortable. But we think the price is overpriced.
What a fabulous hotel, just over 100 rooms. The staff were brilliant helpful, friendly and caring. Concierges, porters and front desk, morning servers. Comfortable bed, Super good soft goods, big towels and robes that fit a normal human being. Large bathroom, shower with a safety bar, but only one overhead shower head. Very good bathroom amenities and very good A/C. Turndown service and endless supplies of drinking water. A welcome gift on arrival and a note is such a personal part of hospitality after a long flight. Good sized mini suite. We enjoyed both bars, the roof top very nice indeed, and an excellent daily breakfast - those hand pies and the yoghurt wowsers. Excellent location for everything and the city bus tours. We did use the hotel car service which while expensive was totally reliable and safe. Close by were several very good restaurants. We cannot recommend this hotel staff enough.
Staff and service
Needs renovation.
Furniture chipped.
Wallpaper torn under TV.
Black mold on ceiling above the balcony outside.
We’ve stayed at the King George hotel in the past and had a wonderful time. The past stay was even better.
As others have noted, the location of the hotel can’t be beat for tourists. It’s right on Syntagma Square, next to Parliament. It’s a 2 minute walk to Ermou Street, one of Athens’ prime shopping district and walking distance to a lot of great neighborhoods of Athens – the Plaka, Monastiraki and Kolonaki. It’s easy to get cabs right out in front if you don’t feel like walking and the metro is literally across the street from the hotel.
The hotel is a sister property to the much larger Grande Bretagne that is next door. Having stayed at both, I really prefer the smaller feel of the King George – it’s just more intimate and understated. The décor is all classic luxury – muted tones, marble, soft lighting, etc. Our King room was very large for Athens standards, with a king sized bed, full desk, sofa, side chair and two walk-out balconies with views of the Parthenon. It has all the modern touches you would want – USB charging ports, convenient panels for lighting / room controls, coffee maker, fridge, etc. The hotel has made some really nice upgrades to the hotel bathrooms – many of the old tubs have been replaced with massive walk-in showers. They are all updated, but maintain that timeless classic, white marble bathroom elegance.
Food at the hotel, is just superb. Breakfast is served in the Michelin starred Tudor Hall. The restaurant has a very elegant dining room and patio with wonderful views of the Parthenon. Breakfast is just wonderful with a lot of fresh and made to order items. We’ve eaten at Tudor Hall on each of our past trips to Athens, and it continues to impress. This past trip, we ate a handful of other Michelin star restaurants in Athens, and Tudor Hall was simply the best meal of the trip. The service is seamless and unobtrusive, food is plated like artwork and the taste is just sublime.
There is a full gym with weights and machines, a sauna / steam and business center. The only thing lacking is a pool, so guests have to go the Grand Bretagne. We were there in early April so wasn’t that hot, but I could imagine wanted better access in the summer months. Still we didn’t really mind, it’s just worth noting.
Service continues to be very impressive at the hotel. They arranged private tours for us, transfers, made reservations, gave suggestions on what to do. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly.
This continues to be one of my favorite Bonvoy hotels in the world, and we’ll absolutely go back.
We stayed at the King George Hotel in Athens over New Year, and it was truly a wonderful experience.
As a Lifetime Platinum member, I was very pleased to be upgraded to a lovely, generously sized room with a spectacular view of the Acropolis. The room had two balconies overlooking the square, which made the stay extra special as we were even able to watch the New Year’s celebrations directly from our balcony, an unforgettable moment.
The location is excellent, right in the heart of the city. Everything is within walking distance, making it easy to explore Athens and its main sights without needing transport.
Breakfast was absolutely amazing, both in quality and variety, and the view of the Acropolis from the breakfast area made it even more special. The service throughout the hotel was outstanding. I honestly cannot find a single negative point.
We also appreciated the thoughtful touches: a beautiful chocolate shaped like the hotel façade, and on New Year’s Eve, we were pleasantly surprised with a Vasilopita cake to enjoy on New Year’s Day. These gestures really made us feel welcome and valued.
Overall, an exceptional stay with fantastic service, an unbeatable location, and memorable views. I would happily return and highly recommend the King George Hotel to anyone visiting Athens, especially for a special occasion.
