The hotel was under construction and the rooms are small. It is often stated that the location is walkable to cruise port. Some docks are further away than others but I doubt most people could walk to port with luggage in tow.
Those points I can accept. However, I will never give this location my business again.
The person at the bar checking us in was beyond rude and condescending. This person should never be the first point of contact for any business. Moxy Southampton, it would be in your best interest to make change there.
I rarely write a bad review and I will give a person grace if they are having a bad day. I was just checking in, asking for nothing extra and he put in jabs anytime he could. Unacceptable behavior!
We stayed for two nights after disembarking from QM2 at the Mayflower cruise terminal. It was a sunny day so we made the 30 minute walk to the hotel. We had three pieces of luggage that was easy for us to maneuver along the way. We arrived at the hotel about 1115, hung out in the bar area, and about 1230 asked if we could check in early and we were able to do so. We stayed in room 334, which were two twin beds. The description on the website has it as a Moxy double sleeper. It is a cozy room. The description on the website has an oversized chair in the room. There is not a chair in the room, just an ottoman. We requested a fan and they provided one for us. (we like to sleep to the white noise ) Has a nice size TV. It’s in a great location with full breakfast. It’s close to a mall with lots of places to eat. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the National Express Harbor Parade bus station. It’s a cute, little quirky place and we will stay there again.
There was no Guiness or IPA, so if you don’t like lager or cider you have no choices, there was still no Guiness the next day!
At check out time the lifts took 30 minutes to get one, this is expected to a degree, however builders, working on the hotel using the lift (WITHOUT LUGGAGE) exasperated a poor situation, and their smirks and laughs at waiting guests was rude! They should be made to avoid check out time, and or use the stairs!
Rooms were interminable hot, with very poor A/C!
Worst hotel stay we've ever experienced. Stayed one night for pre-cruise. No AC, rooms are sauna-like, told to open window which is all of 3 inches. One elevator was out of service so only one very small elevator to handle a very full hotel. Resulted in 30 in waits to get down. Most people took elevator up, or you dragged your luggage down the stairs. Wait, it gets worse. No hot water so enjoy your cold shower in the morning. Breakfast buffet was mediocre at best. A total zoo in the lobby in the morning as people are trying to find their pre-booked taxis to the port. Especially disappointing that management and staff really didn't seem to care.
The Moxy Southampton is an excellent choice when balancing cost, comfort and location.
I wanted to be near the Horizon cruise terminal, and although there were properties closer, their reviews made it clear that they were not as clean and well kept.
Moxy is a full-on Marriott property akin to a Courtyard. it has a chic vibe and all the amenities you would expect. The staff has a definite Gen Z vibe. There was even a social area with a foosball table and video game.
The continental breakfast that is included with some fares consists of not only the usual offerings (eggs, pancakes, danishes), but also a brie wheel and charcuterie. Of note, a large, automated pancake machine turns out the tiniest little pancakes. They’re so small. I wouldn’t even call them flapjacks. But they’re delicious.
The room and bed are quite comfortable, although I never got my room temperature to go below 73° at any point. All amenities (soap, shampoo) are attached to the wall via liquid dispensers.
There’s a bar, kitchen open until 10, and room service. One odd thing is that instead of charging your card for accumulated incidentals at time of check-out, they want you to pre-pay a guestimate of what you think you think you might use. I found that counterintuitive so I elected to pay as I went instead of charging to my room tab.
Also, one elevator was not in service, so the wait for the other one to land was quite lengthy.
Overall, though, I found it to be quite comfortable and would stay again.
We stayed at this hotel the night before our long awaited 11 day cruise on 10/8/2025. Without doubt, this stay was by far the worst part of our vacation. The room was so hot 🥵 that it was impossible to get a decent night of sleep! Calls(3)to management suggested we open the window (opens all of 3 inches), get a fan, we got two fans to no avail, and turn the controls off to keep the heater from constantly pumping more hot air into the room. We did everything suggested and still experienced sleepless night in a sauna before our cruise. In the morning, I spoke to the manager again and was told the system was out of his control as it was designed to heat the entire building. And, more importantly, the system was built to be environmentally friendly. Clearly the system is designed to save operational costs, but at the expense of guest comfort. The manager gave us free breakfast and two drink coupons for our “trouble”. This hardly makes up for a sleepless night. I can NOT recommend this hotel unless you prefer to risk the lack of comfort and control of your room temperature…
We stayed at the Moxy for 2 nights prior to getting on a cruise.
When we arrived at the hotel, we thought it was different & very funky.
The area near the ‘Reception’ is very tight as its combined with the Bar & Restaurant.
There were people milling bout so it was extremely hard to manoeuvre cases.
There was only 1 elevator (of 2) working. The hotel was at full occupancy & we had to wait a long time.
Rooms are a decent size but were very very warm. The A/c was set at 21deg heat and it was a bit ridiculous that you couldn’t alter it. The only option was to open the window a chink! which made absolutely no difference.
Bathroom was a reasonable size and the showers decent.
No fridge in the room.
The Room attendants were great and rooms were serviced very quickly & efficiently every day.
Getting any service at the Bar/Restaurant was a mission. The staff didn’t seem quite pleased to be there. Everything seemed like a huge ask and I thought they were quite rude & indifferent. There were always long queues and not enough people serving.
Food was very very average and took ages to come out.
Breakfast was decent but once again seemed very disorganised & you were lucky to get a table. There just aren’t enough.
Basically most people stay here due to the close proximity to the port. It is very basic and definitely not value for money - more like a captive audience. The weather (whilst we were there) was shocking and rainy.
Chambre petite mais propre et confortable.
Personnel accueillant.
The ac thermostat is set to heat, it was 18c today with the sun beaming through the window but I can't turn the ac on. They've provided us with a fan that is useless. We have a 11 month old baby who is struggling with how hot the room is. Absolutely ridiculous that the thermostat is locked onto heat
It last an eclectic hotel. Lobby area is very loud and breakfast dark. Rooms were basic- no lotion provided.
Plusses---close proximity to cruise ship terminals and downtown; a number of very good restaurants nearby; room prices are very competitive; member of Marriott Bonvoy program; breakfast was provided in the rate
Minuses---Hotel is non descript with virtually no lobby; elevators were a bit grubby with floor wet and soiled; rooms were small and amenities were few and far between; breakfast although in the rate we had was minimal and picked over with limited seating especially given full house the night before; no Bonvoy perks.
Bottom line this is one of Marriott's lower end chains and is more a budget hotel with a good price structure with good location for cruise ship guests.
Friendly staff.
Stayed here for a night swim visiting the boat show. The hotel is very conveniently situated for the show and being next to West Quay there is ample reasonably priced parking. My room was compact but comfortably furnished, especially the bed which was very comfortable indeed.
The bar area of the hotel with breakfast is served however was not so good. The breakfast service appeared rather disorganised and difficult to quickly navigate.
Staff were in the main helpful but in their effort to promote Moxy’s cool hip image some in my opinion had gone too far with their personal presentation which bordered on being out and out scruffy.
I would probably stay there again for the boat show, but if visiting Southampton for other reasons would more likely chose the Novatel.
On entering the hotel, it felt as though we were entering an American diner. Reception, dining area and bar all in the same area. Didn't feel it was a welcoming area.
Staff welcomed us, which was really nice.
Room was a Queen room, however the bathroom was only 1.5m x1m, very small. there was a distinctive drain smell, which was worse in the evenings (reported to manager). The night light around the bottom of the bed, is a brillant idea, if you need to get up in the night.
Breakfast - a varied choose. The only criticism was the lay out of the food, not logical, did not follow through what you needed, ie butter wasn't with the bread or toaster.
It was another great experience and the breakfast was good too and staff very pleasant and helpful.
Review of Moxy Hotel – August 2025 Stay
I recently stayed at the Moxy with a large group of approximately 28–30 rooms (August 24, 2025). Unfortunately, my experience was deeply disappointing due to poor communication, lack of support, and unprofessional treatment by management.
Over 18 months prior to arrival, I contacted the hotel directly regarding a group booking and was informed that they could not accommodate groups. As a result, I booked through a third-party provider. Despite calling multiple times, I was repeatedly given the wrong email address for correspondence. When I finally reached out two weeks before arrival to share logistical details, I was met with a harsh response from the Moxy team. I was told that because my booking was not made directly with the hotel, they could cancel my reservations due to their policy. Additionally, I was informed that our scheduled coach buses (arriving around 9:30 a.m. after an overnight flight from the U.S.) would not be accommodated, and that luggage could not be brought inside until noon.
Upon arrival, we were required to keep over 200 bags in the parking lot until after 2 p.m., despite earlier assurances that six rooms might be allowed early check-in and that staff would help move luggage. No such assistance was provided. In fact, three members of our group had to carry in all 220 bags themselves. I personally approached the front desk several times regarding early check-in for elderly travelers and luggage support, but each time was met with refusal or indifference. Meanwhile, I observed numerous individual guests being allowed to drop off luggage freely.
As a travel professional who has coordinated group stays worldwide, I have never encountered such dismissive and disrespectful treatment. The inconsistencies, lack of support, and the unprofessional manner in which I was spoken to left a lasting negative impression.
While the hotel does benefit from a convenient location near the cruise port, I cannot recommend this property for group stays—or any stay—based on my experience. The management’s attitude was unaccommodating, misleading, and frankly, rude. For these reasons, I would not consider returning, nor would I recommend the Moxy to clients or colleagues in the travel industry
Good location for cruisers
Smallest hotel room I have ever been in. Luggage for cruise made it VERY crowded. After boarding the cruise ship -not known for roominess- was noticeable that the Moxy hotel room was much smaller than our cruise cabin.
Everything was clean however a strange odor in restroom.
We appreciated the Moxy vibe after a long travel time. We stayed here for two nights before a cruise and it was the perfect location for that purpose. Our room was clean and comfortable and the lobby was a happening place. The food/bar staff and menu choices were great! They had a few games available so we played Scrabble over drinks and the food we tried off the menu was tasty. The location made it easy to walk from the bus station to the hotel, sightsee in Southampton, and walk from the hotel to the City Cruise Terminal the morning of our cruise since the weather was nice. If taking another cruise from Southampton we would definitely stay here again!
