Everything was wonderful! The place was beautiful, very clean, and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had a perfect stay and would definitely come back!

ALERT - Hotel Broken Into During Stay - Update II

Providing a response here to address the reply from the hotel management for the Trip Advisor community considering booking a stay at this hotel:

Management’s reply, in short, is that what we have described (in earlier posts below) is false and we are attempting to steal from the hotel -

I have provided 2 photos below that captures our experience that night -

The first, shows the location tracker of the AirTag that was in my bag that was no where we had been before, once we realized it was missing at around 9:30PM local time (once Theresa told the hotel the bag had an AirTag in it, it stopped moving). The second is a picture that was grabbed as I was taking photos of surveillance cameras in the area where we found the AirTag, it captures both the hotel manager himself (Biagio, who replied previously) out with us to track it down (we thought it may still be in the bag that could be with the thieves in a cafe or in the trunk of a car), as well as my wife who had injured her foot earlier in the trip (unrelated) and had a cane. Clearly, we would have preferred to not be out there at 10pm on our vacation.

Following flagging down police, who took a record of the incident and came back with us to the hotel to investigate. The next day, I went with Biagio to the police station to file a report (at 8:30AM for over an hour, again, just anything else would have been great). We re-arranged travel plans, adjusted our schedules, etc. to deal with this to the fullest extent.

To suggest that this was a sham on our part is completely ridiculous. Like most prospective guests reading this review, we enjoy traveling and staying at nice hotels, etc. We were traveling with our standard things, including some relatively valuable items, nothing life changing, and we had them inside our room when we left for a tour with a company that the hotel had arranged. There’s a foundational trust you have when traveling, that a quality hotel will ensure you and your belongings are kept safe on the property. Unfortunately, that was not the case in this instance (our posts below describe that there may have been some degree of coordination between the hotel and the thieves, wether intentionally or unintentionally, they seemed to know when we left and when we would return).

To the trip advisor community, we are in legal proceedings with the hotel and we will keep you all aware of the outcome. We have never experienced anything like this before. If nothing else, we are likely to be similarly-minded travelers, you have seen hotel management’s response to this situation and, at a minimum, should consider this relative to other options in the area.

La struttura è incastonata in uno degli angoli più suggestivi dei Sassi e l’atmosfera che si respira è unica: silenzio, panorama mozzafiato e un fascino autentico impossibile da descrivere a parole.

La camera era spaziosa, pulita con grande cura e arredata con uno stile che rispetta l’identità del luogo senza rinunciare al comfort moderno. Dormire qui è come fare un tuffo nella storia, ma con tutte le comodità di un hotel di alto livello.

Il personale è stato impeccabile: accogliente, professionale e sempre disponibile per qualsiasi esigenza o informazione sulla città. La colazione, servita in un ambiente panoramico, offre prodotti di qualità che valorizzano il territorio.

Una scelta perfetta per chi vuole vivere Matera nel modo più autentico e suggestivo possibile.
Tornerò sicuramente.

ALERT - Hotel Room Broken Into During Stay - Update

Providing an update here to my earlier post. The hotel has made no effort to remedy the situation and has not responded to our communications. I’ve seen hotel management do more for guests over slight inconveniences, the lack of response here has been disappointing. We have engaged legal counsel who filed a claim with the hotel. We will keep this community informed of the situation.

ALERT - Hotel Room Broken Into During Stay

Took a 90 minute tour arranged by the hotel, came back to find we were robbed.

Our room was well up a mountain (a several minute winding walk up hill), not right on the street or any easy opportunity. We have suspicions that this was targeted and there was some degree of coordination between the hotel and the tour company (Ape Tour Matera, our driver’s name was Paolo).

There was access to the balcony through a common area on our level of the hotel.

The thieves rifled through our things, took an expensive watch, bag, pair of shoes and other small items. The bag had an airtag in it and we tracked it to another location (that we had never been to) where it was dropped on the street, where the police and hotel manager (Biagio, who was helpful) came out to meet me to investigate.

We filed a police report, the hotel has video surveillance but has not been willing to acknowledge it. Despite the theft being quite obvious, the hotel owner has not been willing to rectify this in any meaningful way (should that change, this review will be adjusted).

It’s a shame. The city of Matera is absolutely stunning and the food/restaurants are amazing.

Took a 90 minute tour booked by the hotel, came back to find we were robbed. Safety is the absolute bare minimum. If you don’t even have that at a 5 star hotel, why bother. Our room was well up a mountain (easily a 7 minute winding, challenging trek straight up hill), not right on the street or any easy mark/crime of opportunity. It was clearly an inside job- either the hotel staff or they vendor they work with saw their chance while we were scheduled to be away for 90 minutes. Either way, filed a police report, will contact the embassy and will ensure everyone is warned about this hotel and tour provider (Ape Tour Matera- Paolo).

Location unica e soprattutto camere speciali! Se si vuole vivere un’esperienza deluxe nei sassi materani è l’ideale e credo la migliore nel suo genere. Camere curate nei minimi dettagli, reception molto attenta e veloce nelle richieste, navetta perfetta.

The location is amazing! right in the heart of Matera with beautiful views. The breakfast area is wonderful with a lovely atmosphere.

We very much enjoyed the ambiance, room and service during our amazing stay in Matera. You have a wonderful hotel, excellently situated in and unique and amazing location. My one suggestion, when you are advising clients that an option is to walk down to the hotel, you should ensure that you tell them to ignore google maps and take the road and not the stairs.

This is a unique place to stay and feel close to the history of Matera. The hotel is very elegant and the service impeccable.
