We stayed at the Luna for a month in a studio room on the 5th floor, with a view of the church. Please be aware that the complex is at the bottom of a very long, very steep hill. First the positive points
The staff at this hotel are lovely. Nothing is too much trouble and everyone from the cleaners to the maintenance man had a smile and a hello, when they passed you.The rooms are a decent size and cleaned to a high standard. There are plenty of plugs and a decent mirror. The beds are comfortable and there is an extra pillow and duvets in the wardrobe. The safe was free and easy to use as was the air conditioning/heating. There was plenty of hot water in the bathroom and the shower had decent pressure. The hairdryer worked well. Towels and bed linen were changed regularly. If you put your food bin outside you room late at night or early in the morning, it was emptied by the time you got up in the morning. The pool was a lovely temperature and there were sunloungers for you to relax after a swim. With the bar right next door it was nice to enjoy a coffee or a drink on the lounger. We used to have a nightcap in the restaurant area most evenings, while watching the news on the big tv. The reception area at the moment is bright and airy and the live entertainment on a Friday and Saturday was of high quality. The supermarket staff were helpful, the shelves were well stocked and you could also buy the Tallinja travel card there. Although the reception area was having a refurb it didn't intrude on our holiday at all.
Now the negatives
For some reason we were given an interconnecting room and we could literally hear every movement/conversation/shower/snoring from the adjoining room. I did complain at reception but was told there was no other room available. This rather spoiled the holiday and the people in the adjoioning room felt the same. The Sc facilities are quite poor. Just a set of 3 cups/glasses/plates/bowls/spoons etc and 2 saucepans with no lids. The hob is difficult to understand. You only turn one ring on and they both come on and keep knocking themselves on and off. The curtains are not blackout and the balcony light seems to be controlled centrally. The balcony itself is tiny. You can just about fit two chairs there. There is no table. The tv only has 1 English channel -the news. We took a firestick with us, but the tv was so old there was no port to connect it. To see the tv you had to be in bed. There was a sofa in the room but you couldn't watch the tv from there. There is nowhere in the bathroom to hang a towel or a dressing gown and nowhere to put your toiletries , so they have to go on the floor. The water from our bathroom sink was incredibly slow in draining. You couldn't have a wash after cleaning your teeth, you had to wait ages for the water to drain away. Three times I told the receptionist this, yet at the end of the month, the problem was still there.
As others have mentioned, if your room is at the front of the hotel then the noise from the machinery is horrendous from 6am until 5 pm, so no chance of a lie in or siesta. Clearly this isn't the hotel's fault, but it should be noted. There is no noise at the back of the hotel
We were at the Luna in 2025 and enjoyed it enough to return again Jan/Feb 2026. Everything about the hotel is the same as last time. The rooms are clean & comfortable. The self catering facilities remain as they were, more than adequate for a self catering style holiday. If you like a firm mattress, you are in luck. Wi-Fi is faultless in the rooms, Premier league games in the lobby and the cleaners keep the place spotless. The elevators go up and down - what more do you want?
Yes, there is some building improvements going on in the old lobby area but you have to accept a hotel must improve and upgrade and the best time to do this is low season. We are all quick to complain when a hotel begins to ‘look tired’. The builders at the Luna didn’t disturb me or wake me too early and even though there is a bit of dust the domestic team are doing a great job to keep the place tidy.
Unfortunately, it’s not all good news but no blame should be attributed to the Luna.
There is major, and I mean major road works, right outside the hotel front door. There are 5x track machines as well as numerous lorry’s, trucks, vans and concrete mixers as well as a team of workmen. I understand the work needs done but do they have to start the pneumatic road hammers at 0600 GMT? More bad news, this isn’t going to end anytime soon. The buses (which are very good) have been re-routed “until further notice”. Oh dear.
When we booked there was no information about major civil engineering works. Luna have already stated they didn’t have all the information about the road works. I suspect that someone in the Malta road maintenance dept will be sacked - sooner the better.
Not to worry, when you arrive in July it will all be finished, maybe, possibly…
The Luna Hotel is undergoing major reconstruction works and is a major disaster
We enjoyed our trip last year but it had lost all its charm and character what a shame ☹️
Disabled or mobility problems? WARNING! The road outside the hotel is completely closed, you cannot get to door!!! I had assistance from airport. Wheelchair to transfer desk, then wheelchair to coach, where I was helped on board by driver. Nothing said. When coach stopped, was helped oss, and THEN told hotel was about 5 mins walk! Yes, up a long steep hill!!!!. It took me an agonising HOUR to get up to the hotel. So don’t be caught out. INSIST your transfer is by minibus, or taxi, that can get you to the top of the hill. Then just a short walk down to hotel. Also be aware that the hotel is doing a major refurbishment, so half of it is closed off! No outside spaces, no roof access and no lounge areas. Open is the dining room, with small bar, closes 9.30 - 10 pm and one sitting area in lobby corridor with some tired, shabby and torn seats. The indoor pool is still open, and is lovely!
All the staff are lovely, none of this is their fault, they have been so helpful. Our room is smashing, with fridge and little kitchen, spotlessly clean. Food really good, menu changed every day and lovely, good choices.
To combat no buses, there is a local shuttle bus from round corner, up to village and main road to catch main local buses.
So, as I said, DONT BE CAUGHT OUT LIKE I WAS!!!!!
Taking deposit
Although there was a lot of renovation going on in prep for the summer ,we could see the hotel was clean, staff were lovely, well equipped gym, mini market which was very competitive in price. We had a room round the back which prob kept us away from the works, we did SC the kitchenette was well equipped with utensils and washing up liquid 2 gas Hobbs ..which worked brilliantly!! Nice bathroom and great shower , housekeeping every second day. Rooftop pool was closed but we watched some lovely sunsets from it and it has amazing views over the bay. Location was perfect for us we were on a sightseeing holiday and used the buses to travel. Bus stops outside the hotel run regular which will take you most places on the island or just up the hill to mellieha. We found this hotel really good value for money it’s a 5 min walk from beach and 10 min bus to the ferry to Gozo or St Paul’s , so you can dip in and out of the hussle and bussle. Being January we managed to see a lot of the island and attractions due to it being quiet which was our plan. Buy a bus pass for the week for 25 euro, you can also use it on Gozo.
They clean the rooms every day, always change towels, nice staff.
Maybe the indoor pool had to be accessed through the outside, but maybe it was because the hotel was currently undergoing renovations. And maybe there were no changing rooms in the pool area.
Word of warning the indoor pool is described as a family pool but its not for sole use of guests as locals pay to use it and we saw a couple ( an old man with a woman) in the jacuzzi having what I can only describe as adult fun.
Not what you want your kids to witness.
Pool area is also really grubby.
Rooms were clean we had a lovely bay view room. No sun at all on these balconies.
Food was OK but a bit hit & miss.
Would not stay again
