When arriving, there was a fowl smell of mold and of sewerage that was lingering throughout the reception area at the lifts and in the corridors.
The room was stuffy when we entered, and only after frustrating figuring out the aircon, it became bearable.
The one thing we really found terrible, was the smell that emanated from the sink and shower drains. We had to replace the plugs every time we used the shower and basin, to try and stop the smell. Our friends that stayed in the unit on the floor above us, had the same issue.
Secondly, the photos of the hotel is misleading, as the Manta Beach Club doubles up for the hotel pool. We also were not informed that the indoor pool was not open. This was a big annoyance and I feel it spoiled the experience.

First of all, the pool is not part of the hotel, this is rented to another hotel or external company. There are three pools, the main one which the hotel does not have access, you have to pay extra like anybody else. Then there are two more, two more tiny pools. These two pools are packed and dirty all the time. If you try to get an umbrella, good luck!
Second, the staff! They are not friendly as a 5-star hotel staff should be. When I arrived the room was not ready, that’s ok but then I had to wait for about three hours to get the room.
Third, the first day I came back to my room at 2:30pm and the room was not clean.
Fourth, the breakfast is like any other 3 start hotel.

Der nicht eigene Aussenpool gehört zu einem Lido - den ganzen Tag zu laute und bass-lastige Rythmen - keine Musik im Sinne solcher, sondern nur unnötige Beschallung zur Selbstdarstellung des sog. DJs. Das Personal dort ist größtenteils mehr als arrogant und überheblich was man von den anderen Maltesern nicht behaupten kann (dürfte wohl zum "Clubfeeling" dazugehören. Man kann nur Vormittags oder Nachmittags Slots über das Hotel buchen und das nicht spontan, sondern am Vortag - eher mühsam - im Urlaub möchte man auch spontan sein. Und zuwenig Sonnenschirme. Der Innenpool ist in Ordnung und ruhig

Hotel Fortina remodelado por la cadena Barceló. Es un hotel funcional con habitaciones pequeñas y servicio de mantenimiento deficiente. El Lido (piscina exterior) es un pool club compartido junto a la orilla del mar con unas vistas excepcionales pero con un personal snob (no me gusta que me perdonen la vida por usar la piscina como usuario del hotel, ni que tenga que suplicar que me permitan usar los servicios de restauración a unos precios muy elevados en relación a la media de Malta). Es posible que el perfil medio de las expectativas del huésped del hotel no sea los mismos que los del usuario de la pool party y que el concepto de unos vestuarios limpios de una piscina sean distintos de la higiene de un cuarto de baño de una discoteca, de ahí que chirríe unir ambos conceptos.

The smell was horrendous- from the foyer to the bar to our room - smell of sewerage. Room service was shocking - ridiculously long to get anything. Staff were not very helpful.

The pool area staff were a little rude.

Miss sold on it being a 5 star. Just dreadful. Mainly the staff following their own rules. There’s not enough room in the next comment option to describe the awful experience my 87 year old mother and I had.

The pool arrangements were very strange. Required pre booking a day ahead for a sun lounge and no ability to charge drinks from poolside bar to the room. We discovered that the pool and pool bar are actually run by a seperate entity NOT part of the hotel. The underground passage to the pool from the hotel smelled like a sewer which was offputting. Also, pool was basically a day time nightclub situation with DJ. Not our scene at all.
