Beautiful façade, but the beach and service fall far short of the hotel’s standard
Pros:

Beautiful façade, but the beach and service fall far short of the hotel’s standard

The first impression of Mövenpick is genuinely very good: a beautiful and rather grand entrance, spacious public areas, and an overall appearance of a high-end hotel. Unfortunately, once you go further inside, the picture starts to change noticeably.

The rooms also do not feel recently renovated. It is clear that the interiors are no longer new, and the quality of some of the finishing work leaves a lot to be desired. Certain details are simply not very carefully executed. From a hotel of this level, you would expect fresher rooms and much greater attention to detail and workmanship.

The contrast becomes especially noticeable when you reach the beach.

It seems that beaches are one of the weakest points of many hotels in Tunisia, but the situation here is particularly disappointing. I honestly cannot remember seeing this much rubbish on a hotel beach anywhere else in my life. The rubbish bins are overflowing and are not emptied on time, with additional litter lying around them. On the beach itself, apart from the large amount of seaweed that is also barely cleaned up, you can see paper, plastic bags and wrapping, cigarette butts, packaging and other rubbish.

The beach generally looks as though very little attention is paid to it. The sun loungers are left scattered around, and the sand around them is not maintained. For a hotel of this standard, it should be completely normal to thoroughly clean the beach every morning, remove seaweed and rubbish from the shoreline, rake and level the sand, and arrange the loungers neatly. These are basic things, but they make a huge difference to the overall impression.

One positive point is that there is at least a proper shower on the beach. However, I did not see a toilet directly in the beach area. In my opinion, a hotel of this level should definitely have one.

There are also issues with the organisation of the pool area. At 8:40 a.m., when I returned from the beach, staff were still cleaning the swimming pool, and part of the pool area was closed because work was being carried out on the surface. In my opinion, this kind of maintenance and cleaning should be completed much earlier, before guests begin arriving in the leisure area.

At a hotel of this standard, all preparation of the grounds should be fully completed before guests arrive. After that, staff activity should be organised as discreetly as possible, so that employees do not disturb guests or create the feeling that maintenance work is still going on. Unfortunately, here it is quite the opposite: guests are already relaxing by the pool while technical work is still being carried out.

Breakfast is another problem. There are not enough tables indoors, so guests have to wait for someone else to finish breakfast before they can sit down. Naturally, most people want to sit inside because it is simply too hot outside and the indoor area is air-conditioned.

During the approximately one hour I spent at breakfast, not a single waiter approached me to ask whether I would like to order a drink. During that entire time, not one used plate was removed from my table either. For a hotel of this level, this is very poor service.

Another telling example: I asked a waiter for a teaspoon. He said he would bring one, but then continued doing other things. After waiting several minutes, I had to go to the supervisor myself and ask again. I remained standing there until they actually gave me the spoon, because I had the impression that otherwise it would never reach my table.

In any case, it would make sense to place a teaspoon on the table from the beginning together with the fork and knife, especially considering that breakfast includes yoghurts and soft-boiled eggs.

Another point: at around 10:30 a.m., it was impossible to find a single clean plate at breakfast. For a large hotel, this is no longer a minor inconvenience — it is an issue of how the restaurant is organised.

There are even problems with very basic things. For example, the toilet paper is of extremely poor quality — so thin and flimsy that it literally falls apart in your hands. It may seem like a small detail, but it is precisely these small details that contribute to the overall impression of a hotel’s standard.

The result is a very striking contrast: from the outside, the hotel looks beautiful, expensive and impressive, while the condition of the rooms and beach, the organisation of the pool area and the quality of service create a completely different impression.

The hotel has good potential, and many of these problems would actually be relatively easy to fix: improve the condition and finishing of the rooms, organise proper daily beach cleaning, arrange the sun loungers neatly, remove rubbish on time, complete all pool maintenance before guests arrive, pay more attention to guests during breakfast, clear tables promptly and make sure clean plates are always available.

But at the moment, in my opinion, the condition of the beach, certain aspects of the rooms, the organisation of the pool area and the level of service — especially at breakfast — do not match the category or image of Mövenpick.

It is a great pity that I am leaving this hotel with such an impression.
