Lovely hotel especially good for older guests who like entertainment and bingo
Location ok for us...a little outside Newquay town if you were planning on exploring and had walking issues.
We liked the position as we are good walkers and could explore both sides of the hotel.
Food tailored to again older tastes, service was ok for us, some were complaining of waiting an hour for breakfast but TBF breakfast was from 8:15...but majority were queuing before that instead of staggering their times.
Had a great time very clean hotel manager Paul very friendly and helpfull all staff great made our stay good would definitely go back and highly recommended this hotel
I travel with a coach of friends each summer to a Daish hotel. Unfortunately for us we were there July 10th to 14th when there was heatwave across Britain. However this did not deter the staff. I heard some people complaining to reception about the heat in their room, and the staff took it all, as if they could change it!! They would have heat in their own home. The staff made this hotel when it was needed in extreme conditions. A big well done to them. Waiting and chamber staff rushing about in ridiculously hot weather still smiling. I think for what you pay and and for what you get it equals out. Plus there is a pool. Not many have that. Over the road to a beach and beautiful sunset. We can all pick faults in a hotel, but then go home and pick faults in your own place.
Near the town and beaches
No air conditioning
Old rooms and furniture that was dirty
Chaotic front of desk staff and manager
I went to this hotel with Glenton on a 9 day holiday with my sister. On arrival we were allocated our room which had 3 single beds in it and when we went into the room we noticed that there were dark marks on the carpet, some of them were sticky (see photo). There was a balcony but we were not allowed to use it as birds could be nesting! (We could not see any nests anywhere.) But it did have large cracks on the bottom of it. We had a shower ensuite but when we used the shower the water didn't go away for a while and during the holiday we put up with this until there was scum coming up through the drain. I complained about this and it was fixed that day. We asked for an extra toilet roll and was given this but it was never put in the dispenser (you need a key to put the toilet roll into the dispenser) and it sat on top of the cistern for the whole holiday (see photo). We also had to ask for more hand soap for the dispenser as this had run out too! We had a large fan in the room which was on for most of the holiday as we were there in the June heatwave.
There was the customary kettle with tea, coffee, sugar and milk on a tray. Also a small hairdryer if you needed it.
There didn't seem to be a hoover used as when walking along the halls and up the stairs there was dirt that didn't disappear for the whole duration of our holiday.
In the dining room you get a sheet with the menu for the following meal on your table which you need to fill in along with your table number and the menus for dinner are on a four day rotation which are on the wall as you go into the dining room. On the Sunday morning after arriving we were asked what we wanted to eat/drink which was apple or orange juice or a cereal? You have one only, you can't have juice and cereal (although some people did have juice and cereal) then we were asked what we wanted for a cooked breakfast. After giving the waitress our orders we waited 55 minutes for the cooked food to arrive! My sister had to ask for extra sugar at EVERY meal as they didn't replenish the sugar or salt at the tables between meals. Some of the meals were not nice and on leaving the dining room a number of times I saw plates of food that was hardly touched. The fish and chips with mushy peas was tasteless and seemed to be the cheapest frozen fish and chips that you can buy. The only meal that I enjoyed was the lasagna with salad.
The entertainment at night was good as you get a quiz to do (if you want to) and two games of bingo at different times and then singers. A pint of draught Pepsi Max was £3.80 which I thought was a little steep.
There were air conditioning units in the dining room and where the entertainment was but they either didn't work or were never switched on as we were there in the June heatwave and it was very warm.
There were large cracks on the outside walls and some balconies did look very dangerous to stand on as the rails were coming away from the bottom of the balconies.
This hotel needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it back to what it would have looked like when built.
Please don't book this hotel it's a shambles.the only good thing was the bar and dining room staff very pleasant.
Unfortunately after a 12 hour journey no dinner was served to us.got to our room poky and none inspiring. Bathroom with wholly bath mat was replaced.food was dreadful but was told they get £5 a day to feed us. So obviously food is a after thought.
Duty manager not dressed professionally went about with a football strip on, and looked as if he cdnt be bothered . I sat on a small tartan suite I started to scratch I checked it out filthy.i went to reception and spoke to duty manager he asked me to show him so i did. He said he wd have the cleaner look at it in the morning. It was fit for the skip.i cdnt understand as he had walked by it all the time he had worked there. We had to keep asking for towels as they weren't being replaced so no chance of this couch being cleaned.
The dining room had around 150 people waiting for dinner little staff had turned up so the duty manager had to fill in.he left his position to do the dining room and no one was securing the front desk anyone cd come.in and get into reception. I cd go on but be aware before booking
The swimming pool
The heat in the rooms was way too warm the fan they had in our room basically blew hot air around
The Temperature of the room , it was boiling with no air flow
Stayed at Barrowfield hotel June 12th to 16th june
traveled part of coach party, second visit in 3 years both my partner + myself had a fantastic time there both coach drivers to and from very helpfull and polite,i would like to say a very big thank you to Julie (bar manager) who kindly helped us out with a table in the bar area as my partner has to walk with a walking stick (thanks again Julie) room on first floor clean and tidy, all dining room staff plesent as was food (no complaints) we did not use swimming pool so can not coment on that side of things, but overal a good stay and will stay again at the Barrowfield hotel again sometime.
This was our 14th holiday with Daish holidays in the past 4 years ( well done Daish holidays) have just booked our 15th
Throughly enjoyed my stay here cannot fault a thing the room, staff and food was excellent
Great location, lovely hotel staff polite and friendly and helpful, our room was lovely. Great value for money would come again
We did self drive to this hotel.the staff was so helpful. rooms and food was very good. We had a problem with our sports car the day before we came home we couldn’t open our boot so we had a problem how to get our luggage home. I spoke to one of the coach drivers about leaving our luggage as a coach was arriving there on the Thursday and leaving on Monday. He rang someone and they said a coach driver named mick was going our way on the way to Llandudno. He was having his breakfast and we went and asked him without any hesitation he said if we gave him our address he would take them home for us. I can’t believe how helpful they both were a solution to our problem. I can’t thank them both enough what an excellent service they gave us. Thank you again for all the staff at the Barrowfield Hotel we will definitely recommend Dashi Holliday to our friends and travel again with them
Just back from a 4 night break and I have very mixed feelings about this hotel.
I’ll give my review in chronological order, as things happened, and my review is based mainly on facts - not opinion! I feel that by doing this, it gives a fair, but comprehensive review.
When we pulled up outside the hotel after a long 12 hour coach ride from Glasgow, the first impressions are not good - the hotel is not attractive from the outside, it needs some TLC and the first thing you notice is the masses of wheelie bins on show. All that’s needed is a lick of paint and perhaps some nice flower pots and hanging baskets dotted around!
On entering the hotel - what a difference! A lovely, bright, airy and welcoming reception area : clean and tidy with efficient and welcoming reception staff handing out the room keys.
We headed straight to our room : a twin on the 3rd floor. Bright and spacious with 2 single beds - no headboards though so not easy, or comfortable, to sit up on bed to read or watch tv. The duvets are the smallest single duvets I’ve ever seen : far too small to cover an adult adequately and warmly.
We immediately checked the shower (as I always do when I check in to a hotel) and it was simply not fit for purpose - a trickle at best and had it been a woman with long hair it would have been impossible to wash her hair! I struggled and I have a number 2 all over!!! I went straight to reception to report the shower issue to the duty manger - luckily the maintenance guys were there at the time and went straight up to the room to rectify it - I’m now home after my holiday and still awaiting a response! Not great customer service. We had actually to go to the swimming pool in order to have a decent shower : just not good enough : one expects to be able to have at least enough pressure in the shower to have a good wash in the privacy of your own bedroom! (More on the pool later!!)
The lack of attention to detail in the bedroom was not good - no sockets on the wall where the beds were, a tiny tv that was far too small for the room and curtains hanging vertically from the top of a sloping roof/window - why, oh why, there’s not a velux blind on a sloping window is just crazy - the light poured in from very early in the morning and made for such poor sleep.
Housekeeping in the room was shocking, to be blunt!. The carpet was not vacuumed once during our stay, we had to ask each day for extra coffee and milks and the toilet and shower were DISGRACEFUL. The rim of the toilet was black and the shower tray wasn’t much better. To put it simply, it would take hours to deep clean the bathroom in our bedroom - if the cleaning was kept on top of daily, it would (nor should) never get into this mess. There’s simply no excuse here.
Main stair case wasn’t vacuumed for the entirety of our stay either - and due to only having 1 small lift, the stairs are very well used. Again, what’s the excuse?
Food was tasty and piping hot - albeit served rather quickly : not a relaxing dining experience. It’s pretty much in, sit down, starter placed down, as soon as you’re finished your main is served, then the same for dessert - 30/40 minutes and you’re done!
Hot breakfast was good too, but I wasn’t keen on the milk, juices, cereals and fruits waiting for you, uncovered, at your table each morning. Not sure how long they had been there and always worries me when things aren’t kept at correct temperature.(all meals are pre-ordered, so they know exactly what to put on each table!)
Swimming pool was very nice - so warm and inviting.
The changing room and shower area were disgraceful though - I’ve never seen filth like it! Again, absolutely no attention to detail but I’d say verging on hazardous - it was disgusting.
Huge shout out to all the staff, except the blond haired female duty manager who was on the late shift on Sunday 7th : she was unfriendly, unhelpful and rude and really stood out from the rest. Unlike the rest of the staff, she seemed to dislike her job! Everyone else was so friendly, especially the bar manger, Julie : what a really lovely lady.
Entertainment was good each evening - a singer, some bingo and a quiz - great way to mix with fellow guests and a great laugh.
So there you have it, a fair and honest review.
Would I return - yes I would. Great location, lovely staff, good food and exceptional value for money, but the hotel needs to remember that good value for money doesn’t mean that corners should be cut, and plenty were!
Sort out the housekeeping issues, fix the things that need fixing and for goodness sake clean the pools changing area and showers and it’ll be perfect.
Stayed here for 8 nights self drive break from 18th May. We arrived early but were met by a helpful receptionist and used the coffee shop for a snack.
Once checked in our room was spotlessly clean as was the bathroom.
All staff were very helpful and friendly and exceptionally hard working.
There were several choices for dinner and breakfast. The bar and coffee shop prices were very reasonable.Location of the hotel was perfect for us. A short walk into town and around 75 metres walk to the greensward Barrowfields.
There was entertainment every evening.
Would we stay at this hotel again? Most definitely.! Highly recommend this hotel.
We stayed at the Barrowfield Hotel from May 23rd to May 27th as part of a coach holiday, and we had such a wonderful time from start to finish. The whole experience was relaxing, enjoyable and made even better by the fantastic staff throughout the hotel. From the moment we arrived, everyone was friendly, welcoming and always happy to help with anything we needed.
Our room was lovely, comfortable and very well maintained during our stay. A huge thank you to our housekeeper Jessie, who did an amazing job every single day keeping the room spotless, tidy and fresh. It was always so nice coming back after a day out in Newquay to find everything beautifully cleaned and organised. Her hard work and attention to detail really did make our stay extra comfortable.
The restaurant staff were also excellent, especially Jenna, who was absolutely brilliant throughout our stay. She was always cheerful, attentive and professional, and nothing was ever too much trouble. She made every meal feel welcoming and enjoyable, and her lovely personality really stood out. All of the staff worked incredibly hard and always had smiles on their faces, creating such a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout the hotel.
The food was another highlight of the holiday. Breakfast each morning was excellent with plenty of choice and everything cooked really well. The three-course evening meals were delicious every night, with good portions, lots of variety and meals we genuinely looked forward to each evening. Compliments to the chefs and restaurant team for making dining such a lovely experience.
Overall, we had a fantastic coach holiday and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The combination of the lovely hotel, excellent food, comfortable room and truly wonderful staff made for a memorable few days away. A special thank you again to Jessie and Jenna for helping make our holiday so special. We would definitely return and would happily recommend the hotel to anyone visiting Newquay. 🌟
