AMAZING!!! The Romantik hotel, Zell am see is the best hotel we have ever stayed in. It is a family run hotel with proud heritage. It has everything you can ever ask for. It is clean, warm, accommodating, and has extremely nice food. The spa is an incredible way to finish your day skiing with a swimming pool from the inside to the outside, with a jacuzzi and sauna / steam rooms. The location is situated in the heart of the town and walking distance to restaurants, bars, bus stations, and the gondolas. This hotel has really set the standards. Thank you to the lovely family and staff for an incredible experience!
We have visited the Romantik Hotel / Metzgerwirt for many years and with each visit, it honestly just gets better! This trip was a bit different for us, as I have retired recently and wanted to do something a little special and memorable, as a treat to ourselves to mark the occasion, so we booked as usual via Inghams but contacted the hotel to ask if we could pay the upgrade fee to them direct to secure one of their amazing and new suites with a personal sauna. We had a very prompt reply and everything was arranged! On arrival, check-in was done within a minute or two, excluding the ever-present warm welcome we always receive which adds a bit to the check-in time! Up to the room, we were definitely not disappointed - spacious, spotlessly clean, modern, contemporary and well-equipped, and there was the sauna next to the walk in rainfall shower! This was heaven, every day we would use it after skiing, it was fully adjustable to suit heat preferences, and perfect. I did still visit the steam room in the Emotion spa downstairs, and popped in the hotter of the two sauna's there, but most of the week we used just our own. This is a treat which is well worth investing in the upgrade cost.
The hotel has always had some work done between seasons for as long as we can remember and this year is no exception, but we didn't notice in a good way, as the same cosy, warm welcome was ever-present and the services we are used to still continue as normal, or rather even better. Primary amongst these, for us, is the quality of the food and dining experience. This year really was the best ever - the soups were amazing, the salad buffet and cheese buffet generous and very fresh, presented like a work of art - some people we met there were amazed at the choice and quality and said it was amazing to have honeycomb honey and we couldn't agree more, everything is fresh, local, and carefully chosen and presented. Breakfast by the wonderful Erika is always a highlight, and her team including the lady who's name I always struggle to pronounce who has been there for around 30-40 years does the BEST omelettes ever! There are some new staff, all of whom seem to come from a secret place where only the best, nicest people are produced (Zell am See!) and they are all so helpful - from the reception staff, the lovely room fairies, the restaurant staff (Patrick was really on form this year!) and of course the Family Horl - who I will have to give a special mention to this year as we were really spoilt by them!
Anna manages the reception area amongst other roles, and booked us for example a lovely table at Franzl's restaurant on the Schmittenhohe one day, which her brother Sebastian manages, and wow - what a meal! We also had help with our lift passes from a lovely lady who sorted us out with hiking and ski passes, directions, tips and advice, etc. and always the warmest greeting every day (she even gave us a bottle of water each as we waited for our taxi to the bus depot on our last morning so that we wouldn't be thirsty on the trip to the airport). Werner organised an ice curling event one evening, always great fun, with Gluhwein afterwards, and Sabine and Werner organised a very special final night for us and some other longstanding guests with a private and 'secret' surprise schnapps tasting evening in the wine cellar, which was the best night ever, with gifts, cheese snacks, singing and stories being shared. Where else would you have that experience but here!
We returned home a little depressed, knowing that even as I type this, the hotel is continuing with wow-ing new and regular guests, but most of all we miss the feeling that only this hotel can provide - of care and attention to guest experiences, through the warm welcomes and amazing services provided. We saw Josef, the main man of the family every day, and of course Maxi, and we would love to be back having a Guten Morgen from them, but it is also reassuring that when we return, as we will, we will see them all again and find out what is new, what remains the same, and how the two merge into each other with the aim of giving you the best week of the year, every year!
Thank you to all of the staff, from the room fairies who are so lovely to speak to every day, to the restaurant and kitchen staff and the Family Horl who bring it all together for us - what a week!
Romantik Hotel Zell am See – A fantastic stay! Our room was beautiful with a very comfortable bed, and we enjoyed an excellent, restful night’s sleep with no noise at all. We only had breakfast during our stay, but it offered an amazing selection and everything tasted great.
The service was excellent, and the hotel was spotlessly clean. Skiers will appreciate the well-equipped boot room, and the spa was lovely and relaxing. The central location is perfect, and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.
We would definitely recommend this hotel and will stay again on our next ski trip!
Just back from a week's stay at the Hotel Romantik. Our group had three different rooms to fit our party of 9, which included 4 children. A 'Garden Room' in the annex, 'Suite of Dreams' and 'young and royal room'. We were all happy with our accommodation, and had no issues. At breakfast you had a large choice of options, dinner time you were given a choice of three options, which was usually a 'regional option', 'vegetarian' and 'fish', I found it nice to try local Austrian food. The children were given option of eating from this menu or the 'kids menu'.
After a day of skiing it was nice to come back and use the pool and spa facilities, on previous ski holidays we have gone self-catering, so this was a treat for us.
Staff on the whole were friendly, especially Ivana who served us most meal times, and Anna whole I dealt with a lot while booking our stay.
We would definitely stay again at the Hotel Romantik, possible in their apartments, as we did miss some aspects of self-catering (the extra room is handy when you have children). I
Wonderful traditional hotel, excellent food, local dishes. The hotel is stunning, very clean, a wonderful spa. Staff very friendly and do speak English. Car park, ski lockers very close to ski slopes city express.
We’ve just returned from a week’s ski holiday over the New Year break and we loved everything about this hotel. What makes this place special is that it is family-run. I have never experienced better attention-to-detail and dedication to service from any other hotel I’ve stayed in. There is a bit of history on every wall, and it’s fascinating to read about the history of the Horl family.
Our room was perfect for us (family of 2 adults and 2 children). Ample space and very cosy. We loved the free-standing bath and the in-room private sauna was a real treat every day after skiing!
The wellness area and pool were lovely and well-kept. I treated myself to a massage which was really good. My children absolutely loved the outdoor heated pool - there was something magical about swimming outside in the snow.
The food was excellent and so varied (and plentiful). It was really nice to have the opportunity to try so many traditional Austrian dishes. We loved the afternoon tea and having the opportunity to relax in front of the fire after a day’s skiing. Children were also really well catered-for, with the option to go for children’s dishes or to chose from the adults meals. The New Year’s Eve gala meal was so impressive and we really appreciated the aperitifs offered to all guests before the meal. A big thank you to our waitress - Anita - professional, super-efficient and so friendly. She’s a real asset to the hotel!
And finally, the location. Located just steps away from the bustling centre of Zell am See and less than 5 minutes walk (in Ski boots) from the City Express lift. Also 5 minutes walk from the Postplatz bus stops for accessing other ski areas and the airport bus to Salzburg.
Thank you - I will definitely recommend you and we hope to return again very soon!

Enjoy your holiday ⛄️⛷️🔥🎉
Would highly recommend this hotel for a great location and excellent staff!!!
Beautiful hotel in a lovely location, with clean rooms. Very friendly staff and a warm welcome in a cozy atmosphere. The food is also excellent. However, we'd like to share a few tips. We were assigned a table in the restaurant, but requested a different spot, which resulted in a €4 per person extra charge. Furthermore, we had indicated when booking that we were bringing a dog, but apparently, this wasn't properly communicated. And because the hotel didn't know this upon arrival, we had to pay an additional €5 on top of the normal dog fee. It's not about the money, and it's perfectly understandable that a hotel wants to make money, but this kind of commercial activity negatively impacts the customer experience. It wasn't that the hotel incurred any extra costs as a result, so my advice is to avoid such commercial activities.
We’ve just come back from a week here and wow what an excellent family run hotel! All the staff were excellent and could not have been more helpful or friendly - special mention to Caroline who rescued us when the local bus failed to turn up!!
Rooms were spotless and we were delighted with our rooms, as a family of 4 with 2 teenagers we had 2 rooms and couldn’t believe it when both rooms had a personal sauna in them!! What a fantastic surprise that was!
Food was also excellent, a vast choice for breakfast and a 5 course menu for dinner, some of the choices seemed a bit obscure for our British minds but everything we had was delicious and beautifully presented.
100% would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Zell, thank you family Horl for the hospitality
Thank you to all at Hotel Romantik for a wonderful week.
We had a large room with jacuzzi bath and separate sitting area and a small sunny terrace. The hotel staff were lovely, always very helpful and welcoming. Breakfast was fantastic and dinner was very good. We loved the spa and pool. There was always somewhere to sit and relax in the hotel. The summer card is excellent and we loved being able to borrow e-bikes from the hotel too. Many thanks also for our packed lunch to take as we had an early check out on the day of departure.
Hervorragend, aber hatten keinen Kühlschrank im Zimmer.
Hotel was fantastic outside and inside. Bedrooms amazing
Lovely beds and bedding. Shower room. Separate bathroom. Shower gel and hand gel provided. Sleeps 3. Balcony can just see the lake. Brochure is misleading by showing lakeside views. Includes dressing gowns . Hairdryer but only works for a few minutes before cutting off. Only small towels. Dining good but oddly was told you get yout table for the week. Then moved us. Wanted to dine outside but was told no. Pay extra for that at dinner but couldn't even dine out at breakfast. Sadly that was annoying. Food was sometimes good most days. Charge for tap water if you don't buy a beer or wine. Be careful and ask for tap water or you get mineral water at over 6 euros a bottle. Breakfast are brilliant. Hotel has bikes to borrow/hire. Room has a fridge. There are no instructions or information details in your room which did make some things difficult and had to keep asking at reception. Most staff speak English. Pool and spa area are stunning. Sun beds we never had a problem getting one. Pool towels provided. Best thing they offer is the summer card.
We are absolutelly stunned by Romantik Hotel. Central location, just 3 minutes walk from the lake. Old and beautifully maintained building. Common areas a little dated but in traditional, Austrian style. Our room was fully renovated, spacious and comfortable, had fantastic garden and lake view. Breakfasts were very tasty and we could always eat them in the hotel garden, which is totally amazing- full of flowers and singing birds. Staff was so kind and helpful. We truly appreciate the individual approach to hotels’ guests- daily Morning Post, beach bags and e-bikes rental. We have already discussed coming back next year!
We have just had a great holiday at this hotel . Staff were excellent , always helpful and friendly . Food was good with a wide variety of choices . Would highly recommend this hotel . Rooms were clean and the hotel always had a good feel about it .
Romantik Hotel Zell Am See exceeded our expectations. Perfectly located; a short walk from the train station with a beautifully decorated lobby and bar area. The staff at reception were pleasant and efficient and suggested hiking trails close to the hotel. The spa facilities were wonderful. We booked an apartment with a full kitchen and a balcony overlooking the mountain. Highly recommend a stay at Romantik Hotel.
Romantik Hotel Zell am See was the absolute highlight of our honeymoon. From the stunning lakeside location to the warm, welcoming atmosphere, everything about our stay was unforgettable.
Our room was incredible—spacious, beautifully designed, with a balcony overlooking the lake and our very own in-room sauna. Waking up to the view, sipping Prosecco on the balcony, and ending the day with a private sauna session felt like something out of a dream.
The hotel’s wellness area is just as impressive, with multiple saunas, a serene indoor pool, and that perfect Austrian spa vibe. After days of adventuring, it was exactly what we needed.
Special shoutout to DJ at the front desk—he was hands-down the best hotel staff we encountered anywhere in Austria. Friendly, helpful, and just a genuinely great guy who made us feel right at home.
We can’t recommend this hotel enough. If you’re coming to Zell am See, this is the place to stay. Romantic, relaxing, and truly unforgettable.
Just such a lovely family hotel. Everything you would hope for.
The food, the staff, the location are all perfect.
Big comfy beds, excellent shower. Great Spa. Bars around but not noisy at all. The Crazy Daisy across the street has live bands most nights to.
Warm & welcoming!
As a general rule we have been more than happy with our stay. The staff are friendly the Spa is extremely nice and the location is excellent. One massive downside, if you are coming and are given room 404 GET MOVED.
I complained about the noise every morning, the room is over the kitchen, and was bizarrely told I could not be hearing anything as the kitchen do not start work until 9am. We go to breakfast at 8am and are one of the last!!!!
I was offered a new room at a supplement as apparently I knew what I was booking. The adjoining rooms are not above kitchen and cannot hear anything.
So in conclusion a lovely Hotel but not room 404
We couldn't wait to return 'home' this year after unfortunately having to miss our ski holiday last year. As always, the hotel was fantastic. We stayed during a week when the hotel was fully booked, so we expected a busy week, but you'd never know - there was just a lovely, calm feeling - from check-in through to departure, we just relaxed the whole time. Our room was lovely, it is one of the smaller rooms in the front of the building, and the standard of room cleaning was fantastic - the room fairies were certainly the best. For us, the highlights of our week away are seeing the staff and Family Horl, enjoying the food and having a nice relax in the sauna - all three wishes came true! The only disappointment was that Sabine was poorly and away convalescing, but we kept in touch with her via social media and Werner and Anna, so although we missed seeing Sabine, we did manage to 'speak'. The staff throughout the hotel are great - too many to mention without leaving someone out, but as mentioned, the room fairies are top of their game, the restaurant staff are efficient, friendly and helpful - if it is possible, even during this busy week, they seemed even more efficient - we felt like VIP's but that's why we come here, the service is wonderful. We loved our time in the sauna, at the end of every day we relaxed in the Emotion spa, lovely and quiet and almost like having our own spa, with steam baths and saunas and an infrared cabin. We both agreed that somehow, despite the always high standards, the food this year was even better - we had lamb one night which was amazing, another night a thick tuna steak, cooked perfectly - the salad buffet is plentiful, the cheeses amazing, and the service always great - and as everyone knows, my treat is the breakfast - I cannot praise Erica enough, or the two omelette chefs (one was a young man who was as good as his mentor, who has been there for decades). We had a new table position this year, a change from our usual table but even nicer, with the same great views of the garden. We joined the ice curling evening, organised by Werner at the leisure Centre, always great fun, and we enjoyed seeing Walter again and having a Gluhwein on the welcome evening. A special thanks to the reception staff too, who really help and look after you, and of course Anna and Werner who are everywhere and the best hosts you could hope for. One final treat on departure day, or depression day as we call it, was seeing Josef again before we left - he is fantastic! We had a lovely send off from him, and we cannot wait to come back, to feel pampered, relaxed and happy! Thank you to the whole hotel, and we hope Sabine is taking it easy now that you are back home.
