A great hotel overall but special mention must go to Matt on Reception who helped us out with a couple of things. Excellent customer service!
As soon as we walked into The George Hotel we were greeted by a very friendly staff. Without exception all the staff is very accommodating and want your experience at The George to be the best. Our room was large with comfortable beds, plenty of closet space, a nice bathroom with heated floors and warm towel racks. The food was topnotch. Each morning we ate breakfast in the dining room. At night we would choose between the main dining room and the tapas tables in the bar. One we arrived and settled in our room, we ventured to the nearby Willow Bank Wildlife Reserve. The next morning we traveled to Akaroa for a nature cruise, as well as, a visit to the Giant's House. The location of the hotel allows for easy access to nearby activities. It's also a short drive to the airport. We would highly recommend The George Hotel for a great Christchurch visit.
I expected more from this hotel for the price. Pros: great location across from a park, free self-service laundry, wonderful staff, nice
balcony. Cons: tired/dated building, tiny rooms (we stayed in at least 7 NZ hotels on this trip and this was the smallest of all), glass bathroom door which offers no privacy. We did love Christchurch.
Absolute pleasure to stay in this hotel, great staff + room, they did an evening turn down, left a chocolate + a teddy bear to take home.
Fabulous bed + facilities.
Directly opposite Hagley park which is free + a joy.
If i could give this hotel 11 stars i would.
Another great experience.
The George has it all: staff service, location, and quality room accommodations. We were very pleased with our recent stay. Staff went above and beyond to help us out w some issues due to lost luggage.
Fantasic hotel. I'm of a fan of 99% of SLH's and this one is right up there. Warmly greeted when we got there. Room was cozy and spacious. I love a place that provides FREE washers and driers for clothes. The food was fantastic.
We had a lovely room on the 5th floor and it was very comfortable. The staff were friendly and very efficient. Overall a great stay.
The George again didn't disappoint - fantastic service, amazing food and stunning rooms with lovey gardens and so close to the centre of the City. 10/10 - keep it up team!!!
What a great hotel. We received a really warm welcome from April who was very happy to chat to us and even brought us drinks to the room on arrival (even though we noticed she was also taking care of bringing in other guests luggage) The room was great a very large comfortable bed (with foam pillows available on request) a lovely large well lit bathroom and tea coffee making facilities. There was also a complimentary guest laundry (although we didn’t make use of this) Well located for walking into and around Christchurch. Excellent breakfast where you can have an a la carte plate as part of the full buffet option.
Of all the hotels we stayed in during our 25 days in NZ, The George in Christchurch was by far our most favorite. A great boutique hotel with exceptionally friendly and professional staff. As one would expect in a boutique context, the attention to detail was in everything. The room had all comforts, breakfast is great, the decorations around are done with a lot of taste. Thank you for making our stay in Christchurch a heartwarming experience.
PS. Our son (9 y.o.) loves his George teddy and believe it or not it has become his new nighttime buddy! Nice touch.
We love The George and always stay here when in Christchurch. It has an understated elegance and I love the location right on the park. Great for beautiful walks there. Town is about 10, 15 minutes walk away depending on your speed.
We also love the plentiful parking inside the hotel complex. That is something quite rare in inner city hotel, usually more something you get at motels but then the rooms and service aren't as nice as at The George of course.
The rooms are lovely and certainly have everything you need. Nice modern bathrooms and beds we've found quite comfy.
The service is amazing of course and we always love the nightly turndown service with some water and chocolates. And on your first night they go all out to welcome you, with some lovely pastries and of course the George bear to take home.
But the heart and soul of The George are the staff - always helpful and trying to make sure you're getting the most out of your stay. I'll be forever grateful to the lovely young woman at reception who absolutely made our day. When I booked i had only been able to snag an executive rooms as the premium rooms were all taken. That had happened before and had been fine, but this time we ended up room 117 on the ground floor. Same George service but a bad choice if you're a light sleeper as it's next to a road. As hubby definitely falls in the light sleeper category I was immediately worried. When I asked the young lady at reception of there was anything they could do, she was absolutely amazing and immediately offered two alternatives and even offered to show me the other rooms. She really made my day and we couldn't have been happier with the new room she suggested. Thank you thank you thank you!
A lovely hotel in a beautiful city. Conveniently located next to the Botanical Gardens and Hagley Park. Very comfortable rooms and an excellent bathroom with heated floor and towels rail.
Good breakfast with a mix of a La Carte options and continental buffet.
Our stay at The Residence, comprised of three beautifully appointed rooms and a spacious main drawing room, was overall lovely. We especially enjoyed relaxing by the fireplace and spending time in the private yard space, which added a serene touch to our experience. The property was impeccably clean, and the service was attentive and professional throughout.
Unfortunately, our timing coincided with the Lakes Festival, an all-day rave that started at 12:30 pm and ended at 10:30 pm. The rooms were not soundproof, so we heard the pounding bass until late evening, which made it hard to fully enjoy the hotel. While this was no fault of theirs, we appreciated that they offered earplugs. However, a pre-warning would have been helpful—we only received a letter on our beds after returning from dinner, much later than when we first inquired about the music.
Despite this hiccup, the elegance of The Residence and the quality of service stood out. With better communication about local events, this would have been a perfect stay.
Fantastic location and walking distance to town. Park across the road also. Great hotel and friendly and excellent staff, Having stayed in Christchurch a lot the George in my opinion is the best hotel in Christchurch. Housekeeping services also excellent.
Lovely hotel in a good location.
Good breakfast and friendly staff.
Easy access to botanic gardens and the town centre.
Loved the touch of giving me a bear to take on our travels.
We loved this hotel. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. There was free parking at the front of the hotel and we never had a problem getting a park although I believe they do have an overflow parking area.
We had a Park Suite which was very roomy and had everything we needed. There was a separate bedroom and a roomy lounge room. Nice views over looking the river and the park.
Well located and having the park handy was great for a walk or run.
I booked The George based on Trip Advisor and Booking.com reviews and it certainly didn't disappoint. Located on the outskirts of central Christchurch it's an easy 10-minute walk into the city centre. The staff are fantastic - friendly and very helpful. We stayed in an Executive King room which was very roomy and comfortable with a lovely view of the garden. If we were to visit Christchurch again then we would certainly stay at The George!
Overall, we were comfortable at the hotel — the room was enjoyable and the hotel in a nice location across from the park. We lacked complimentary water and felt the service fell short for the price paid (my expectations would be lower for a standard hotel, but it’s advertised as Small Leading Hotel of the World). One exception was Quentin in the restaurant. His level of service was outstanding and true example of what the service industry can be. Otherwise, front desk staff was average and we did not feel the same feeling as we do in other properties this level.
The gym is nice and a separate building right next door. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom/shower nice except the sink area was small/cramped. We had breakfast at the restaurant which offered a variety of choices. With being right across from the park, that was nice. But it is a 15-20 minute walk to central business district which was fine but got a tad annoying after walking it 3 or 4 times.
Thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay here - our room was comfortable, clean and well maintained, and the location of the hotel was perfect for exploring Christchurch on foot and particularly for visiting the botanic gardens and Hagley Park. Breakfasts were great. Most importantly, though, all of the staff we came into contact with were delightful and extremely helpful - Mark, the concierge, deserves special mention. Would be delighted to have the opportunity to stay here again.
Amazing hotel, great location, friendly staff. large rooms, great gym. I will stay here again. The view to the park its a huge +
