The Shore

The price :-) but its understandable I went in summer and the island probably only make money during summer. Plus, I didn't book far ahead. But it is okay because I went for very specific thing I just want to see the Skara Brae.

We arrived off the ferry at 11.30pm and went straight to the hotel, there was a notice on the door telling us to check in at the Kirkwall hotel along the street. The guy took us along an alleyway to a side door. Our room looked ok at first glance in the dark, but it was cold and felt a bit damp. We were tired and went to bed expecting a good nights sleep but someone in the room above started pacing the floor at 12.30am, the floorboards creaked, this went on until about 2.30am.
In the cold light of day the room was not what we expected for £242 per night. There was no sea view, we looked over wasteland and the dustbins. The towels were ragged around the edges, there were stains on the carpet, the window frames were filthy, blinds dusty, and black mould around the windows and in the shower. There was a rusty tin of ground coffee which we didn’t touch.
We stayed 3 nights, the noise from upstairs continued until 1.30 both nights.
We did t eat or drink in the hotel next door so could t comment.
We didn’t complain as I would have found it too stressful

We felt that the Shore could do with an upgrade. The view we had looked out onto the refuse bins and the mattress was very poor quality with the springs digging in.

Small window looking at another window and a big wall over a flat roof, no view whatever and little light.

Walls paper thin, with adjacent bathroom in constant use over Saturday night presumably someone been out drinking heavily kept flushing and running taps for drinking water between 11pm and 3am so couldn't sleep at all. Sunday much quieter and Monday moderate use a couple times in the night but very loud and provided refill so very disturbing. A bit of adjustment and soundproofing, or notices to be considerate, would help..

The 'view' was of internal walls of the hotel. There was a lot of noise from people upstairs moving around in the evening - I was surprised at how much transferred. Breakfast wasn't included (apparently it would have been if I'd booked directly rather than through Booking.com)

Bed was a bit lumpy.

The room was in a separate annexe that was obviously a closed down hotel. There is no lift so luggage has to be carried up all the stairs and through various fire doors. The entrance is a fire door which is not very welcoming unlike the proper hotel next door where you check in. The room was very expensive but this may have been affected by the timing during the island games.
