I chose MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Franz specifically because the Booking.com reservation clearly stated "Pay at the property" and offered free cancellation until 1 May.

Despite these conditions, the hotel charged the full amount to my credit card several days before arrival and before the free cancellation deadline had expired. I was never informed that a prepayment would be taken, nor did I authorize such a charge.

What made the situation even more frustrating was the way it was handled afterward. When I raised the issue at the hotel, a staff member wearing a headscarf told me that Booking.com had processed the payment and that the hotel was not responsible.

However, the written response I later received from Booking.com tells a different story. Booking.com explicitly stated that the property was only authorized to perform a pre-authorization or temporary hold and that posting the full charge was outside their policy. They also confirmed that they had never agreed to the hotel taking payment in advance and apologized for what had happened.

The issue is not the money itself but the principle. I deliberately selected a "pay at the property" rate because I was travelling with a colleague and we intended to settle our payments separately upon arrival. Instead, my card was charged in full without notice.

A hotel's booking conditions should mean something. If a property advertises "pay at the property" and "free cancellation," guests should be able to rely on those terms. Being charged in advance is bad enough; being given information that contradicts Booking.com's own written findings makes the experience even more disappointing.

Based on my experience, I would advise future guests to carefully monitor their card statements, even if their reservation states "pay at the property" and "free cancellation."
