The older barman is a gentleman and a wonderful waitress, sorry I didn't get her name. (Working Monday 13th April) She couldn't have been more helpful
3 hours wait for check in... someone could have called to let us know. Check in at 3, got keys at 5.50pm.
There was a concert on so limited menu on the first night, being gluten intolerant, the waiter told me there wasn't even bread but the waitress the next day couldn't have been more helpful. I had to sit with a cup of tea while my family ate on the first night. Thankfully there was a centra a short walk away and I grabbed fruit and yoghurt there.
We had a suite with kitchenette... oh boy... no sink. Four mugs and one teaspoon. It wasn't very pleasant having to rinse our mugs in the bathroom sink. No new ones for day two.
We stayed two years ago and that's why we chose it again. Not the next time im afraid
My partner and I stayed in your hotel on the night of April 7th.
We discovered that all restaurants in Athlone had closed by 9 pm.
I want to say a very big thank you to Maria at the front desk and Raj, the duty manager, for getting the kitchen staff to conjure up a meal for two at the last minute.
They were so helpful and friendly to us. You are so lucky to have staff like that, going above and beyond their duty of care for your customers.
They made our stay in Shamrock Lodge so memorable.
We will definitely be back.
Well done to all.
Large, clean, comfortable rooms. Plenty of free parking on site.
Heating was somewhat inadequate.
Lovely staff, great room, easy walk into the town and a good breakfast. Also, great bar staff!
Good breakfast no complaints at all .
Staff very friendly.
Room spotless .
Would recommend to friends and good value .
Dinner really nice and bar staff friendly.
Enjoyed my stay .
Liked everything about the whole experience. One of the staff brought a box of lily o'briens chocolates to my room as a birthday present and a card. Was very thoughtful
Everything was excellent as always. We have stayed in the Shamrock Lodge several times in the last few years and will always recommend it to everyone.
Staff are so friendly. The short distance into town center is fantastic.
The first thing I want to share is that there is abdolutely no difference between a suite and an apartment bar a few extra kitchen appliances (hob, washing machine, sink). In fact, they are co-located external to the main hotel. The website is misleading and implies a difference. It also states that a sofa bed is available in the suite for a 5th person - this was not true. I would not recommend booking for 5 people. We booked "a suite" and initially were given one with a single bed IN PLACE OF a sofa (nowhere for 5 people to sit). We were then moved and given an apartment 2 doors down with a sofa and a camp bed that had seen better days cramped into the living room. My son ended up sleeping on the sofa as the camp bed was so uncomfortable.
The entire place was pokey and in need of a facelift (think 20 year old student digs). The en suite reminded me of a ferry cabin and had a tiny corner sink with the tap so close to the edge of the basin that water went everywhere each time we used it. The shower was tiny with no shelf to put your stuff on. No washing up liquid or tea towels were provided (not ideal for self catering). There was also no dining table, just a coffee table. The TV didn't work.
We booked in for breakfast one morning. It was awful! Low quality meat, congealed overdone eggs, no decent coffee... I've honestly had better at Premier Inn. The tables were manky and no one seated us (we got a bored "yeah, sit wherever" but nowhere was clean & set). They did get us some nice porridge when I asked though.
The positives... apart from the camp bed, the beds were comfortable, the rooms were cool and dark, the area was quiet. We all slept well. Plenty of parking. All the staff (predominantly Irish) were really helpful, friendly and nice to deal with (bar the afore mentioned waitress who maybe needs a customer service refresher). It was handy to have a fridge and the location was good - short walk to restaurants / cafés etc. The showers, while cramped, had good flow & hot water.
All in all, the Shamrock Lodge served its purpose but we were very glad we only booked for a couple of days & probably won't return.
