A magnificent historic building with exceptional interiors, a perfect location, and an atmosphere that is both elegant and deeply memorable. Every detail reflects a strong sense of history and aesthetic beauty. Having stayed at Kanalhuset before, I was delighted to return.
We had requested a family room and assumed it would be similar to the beautiful, spacious upper-floor apartments overlooking the courtyard that I had enjoyed during a previous stay. After some confusion in communication, we confirmed that an extra bed for our youngest child could be arranged, which the hotel provided for an additional fee, which was ofcourse fine.
What was disappointing was that families appear to be routinely assigned to the ground-floor rooms facing the street. These rooms are significantly smaller than the upper-floor apartments, much darker, and have single-glazed windows at street level with very poor sound insulation.
The biggest issue was sleep quality. The room had no blackout curtains. When we raised this with the hotel, we were told there simply were none and were given four eye masks instead (so obviously we were not the first nor only ones…) Unsurprisingly, the children did not use them. As a result, we woke up around 5 a.m. every morning when daylight filled the room, often after already being disturbed by noise from people walking directly outside the windows.
This is not because the neighbourhood is particularly noisy. The problem is that these ground-floor rooms have much poorer windows than the upper-floor rooms, which on previous visits also had proper blackout curtains.
In addition, there appeared to be a yoga studio or party room directly above us, creating considerable noise from early morning and late evening.
What I find difficult to understand is why families seem systematically to be placed in the least comfortable rooms in the property. Had the room description made these differences clear, our expectations would have been very different. What makes this even more surprising is that the price difference between the room categories did not seem proportionate to the very significant difference in comfort, space, and overall experience.
The communal dinner was an extra special surprise!
