Professional property host/manager
It was a good place to stay for the night. The breakfast and coffee were both excellent. I would recommend it.
Great view from room of the rock. Easy transport to rock by motocab. So worth it to stay overnight and go up the rock before the crowds. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Good breakfast and on site restaurant. Easy walk into town. Room cozy/rustic with bed a double. Bring your own shampoo, hair dryer and hand towel. If needed.
Cool bathtub on balcony
This hotel was very nice and a very reasonable rate. The manager was unfailingly nice. So nice.
Unfortunately, there were a few things that could have been better:
1) As of Feb 2025, there is construction right next door, as new apartments are being built. It makes things quite noisy between 8 am and 530 pm. It would have been nice to receive notice about this in advance of our visit.
2) It would have been nice if shampoo was provided;
3) Breakfast was delicious; unfortunately, however, they both ran out of yogurt & had limited options for children [no cereal, no pancakes].
4) I also thought it was too bad that, even though our room rate included breakfast, they felt it necessary to charge for more than one drink with your meal (so if you got a coffee, you got charged for wanting to drink a juice, too).
5) They had kayaks for use; but it was 50.000 for a four hour minimum. This is very expensive for Colombia to have this type of four-hour minimum at a hotel. and
6) It was also unfortunately noisy with trucks going by in the early morning.
All told, a good backpacker hotel. Beautiful water views. But just felt like even though the manager was so so so nice and lovely -- the hotel itself can get better, even if you have to charge a few more pesos in a nightly rate. Nice hotel, convenient to town, but will not return

7) We were supposed to have a water view, but they had a tree which had overgrown our window and they had not gotten around to cutting it. Again---like running out of yogurt, like the noise next door, like kayaks---these are just things they can communicate, can do, are fixable.

A lovely quiet location away from the noise of the town centre but close enough to walk easily. Our room had a small private deck and a bath. Breakfast was included and was cooked to order. The staff were attentive and helpful and very caring when I had a medical emergency, not hesitating to provide me with first aid (there was a lot of blood and they didn’t flinch at cleaning and dressing my wound). Bonus is the lovely ginger cat!
Fantastique
Very clean and wonderful staff. I would have give all areas 5 stars but the hot water did not always work and the walls were very thin, so you could hear the neighbors very easily. Other than that it was great!
Great place to stay above the touristy center; an easy walk or take a tuktuk uphill for 4000 cop (about $1.20 US). Super comfortable bed and soft sheets. Great views of the rock and lake from the lobby and balcony.
Sandra, the owner, is wonderful. They have kayaks, but the reservoir is too dry right now.
Breakfast at the restaurant is included and tasty. Dinner was even better: limited menu but I loved the salmon, crepes, and salad.
The water heater can be finicky. I had to run it for awhile for a hot shower.
This is pretty much is a motel with not even a tv I don’t recommend this place
Guatape is a gorgeous little town, and La Madriguera is a peaceful place to stay, with splendid views and warm service. You can easily walk to the center. A tuktuk from the square up the hill is 4000 COP ($1.10).
Be sure to book a room with balcony. Beds are firm, sheets so soft. And the attached restaurant is simple but marvelous. Breakfast is included. I had dinner there twice. Staff speak some English, but a little Spanish is helpful.
Hope I can return to kayak when there’s more water in the lake/reservoir. Guatape deserves more than an hour on a day trip from Medellin. Stay.
My partner and I had a quick weekend away in Guatàpe and we are so happy we selected La Madriguera Hotel. The owner, I believe her name was Sandra, was so warm and welcoming. The hotel is very close to the centre of Guatàpe, however, it was very quiet at the hotel.
Breakfast was included in our stay and it was so lovely and calm in the little restaurant which looked out over the lake.
This hotel is very close to the city and has beautiful views of the Penal. The on the balcony bathtub was most enjoyable. The made to order breakfast was a great way to start the day. The property does have canoes and kayaks available to guests. The room was very simple. There was no coffee maker, television, or room darkening shades. I wish there was a vanity shelf to place my toothbrush and paste, hair brush, etc. and some warmer lighting.
