Great Historic Visit
Pros:

Nice large room (#8) with 3 balconies (not a cave room). There is a lack of privacy but there is a sheer curtain you can cover doors with. People walking come up to the doors and look in so the sheers are needed. There are good black-out curtains for night time.

Very nice large luxury towels are provided. Beds are comfy and the room is clean.

Cave rooms are large and authentic. Although, there are no windows and are moist inside and clothes and bedding feels a bit wet.

Hotel is in great location and the drop off is only 10 stairs and a 2 minute walk away from reception. Everything else in Matera is uphill both ways.

Reception is very welcoming and helpful with information. A nice glass of their wine is provided at check in. The pre-arrival information and response is also great.

Breakfast is continental with a bit of cooked eggs & bacon (served luke warm) and a nice selection of cereals, meat & cheeses, and pasties. Great coffee (americanos, cappuccinos, etc provided).

The tv has a few English channels and access to your Netflix, etc accounts.

For those with cave rooms and for the restaurant there is a nice terrace area outside. There are no sun umbrellas so a hat and glasses may be needed

Cons:

- Shower is in with the toilet room (small area) like a trailer. Floor gets wet and you have to use the toilet with a wet floor. No slippers provided - thus wet socks
- Limited products. Only one hand soap and combined shampoo/body gels. No conditioner or body lotion. Not really plush.
- Coffee pods in room cost €2.50 each.
- No hooks for towels (other than one in the shower) which gets wet
- Balcony floors need cleaning
- Terrible amount of room perfumes in the room. We removed the deodorizer and defusers and put them on the balcony.
- Kettle provided but mini espresso cups only provided. The staff will provide larger cups & wine glasses if asked. .
- No bottles or filtered water provided.
- Breakfast stats far too late at 8:30am. Most tours and transportations start early.

Unique stay
Pros:

A distinctive hotel seamlessly built into the rock with a design that feels natural. The rooms are beautifully curated and the entire experience has a special charm that makes it stand out.

The only points that did not fully live up to expectations were the breakfast and the bathroom amenities. The breakfast was rather tasteless and simple compared to the overall standard of the hotel and the toiletries in general did not reflect the level and character of the property. A more elevated offering in both areas would truly complete the experience.

Pros:

Struttura bellissima, personale gentile e disponibile. La colazione era abbondante e i dolci tutti davvero buoni. La camera era molto bella e ben arredata. La posizione eccellente.

Cons:

Pros:

Great location
Charmant and unique accommodations in caves

Cons:

We were a family group of 5.
The double room lacked a bit of comfort for the price, toilet with zero privacy. No full length mirror in the room
The family room is in a different location (not mentioned in the description). Is more modern with less character . Has a small bathroom next to the kitchen and not close to bedroom.
The breakfast has room for improvements of food options. Not a fan of a single long table where you sit with other guests, my personal taste.

Beautiful hotel well-located in the Sassi, Matera.
Pros:

Il Palazzoto is a beautiful hotel in the middle of the Sassi. Despite worrying about all the steps in the Sassi with luggage, the taxi dropped me essentially in front of the hotel – gentle steps up to reception. My room wasn’t actually a cave room it was in a separate section of the hotel, but it was beautifully appointed, spacious, and warm! (It was freezing that week!). The breakfast room was in a cave, and it was a lovely buffet spread complete with cappuccino. The reception staff were very helpful, and overall, I wish I had stayed longer than 2 nights. Matera is fascinating!!

Cons:

Should have stayed longer.

This is a wonderful hotel to stay in Matera. You couldn’t ask for better.
Pros:

Fabulous location. We had a car, and it was super easy to park in town at the place recommended by the staff, where we got a shuttle van right to the hotel in old Matera. Room was beautiful “cave” with extraordinary lighting and amenities. Staff was warm and extremely helpful.

Cons:

Nothing not to like.

Pros:

Fairytale
Pros:

Matera is a fairytale UNESCO dream come to life. After an easy hour’s drive from Bari, we found ourselves in a city carved into the "Sassi" rock formations, and staying at Il Palazzotto was the highlight of our trip.

This is an architectural marvel. Sleeping here feels like being inside a piece of art. Our room was a masterclass in design: think lights and taps emerging directly from the ancient stone in a way that feels both frugal and incredibly sophisticated.

What truly sets this place apart is the D’Angelo family and their staff. From the moment we arrived and were greeted with a welcome glass of wine, we felt less like guests and more like pampered family members. A special shout-out to Antonio and his staff, who was incredibly helpful with local tips and organizing our luggage shuttle.

The common living area where breakfast is served is breathtaking; it’s a stunning carved space where you can enjoy local delicacies served with genuine care. For dinner, don't miss their sister spot, Radino Wine Bar. The tasting menu was delicious and they were wonderful about catering to gluten-free needs.

If you want a soul-stirring, artistic experience rather than a standardized hotel stay, this is it. We’re already counting the days until we can return.

Cons:

nothing honestly.

Notevole
Pros:
