You pay for the location
Pros:

The hotel is located where all the other hotels are in Alishan - which is good. The room is spacious and it seems that the whole hotel has been renovated recently. My room had a nice view towards a very green forest.
The breakfast is OK, but it is served in a buffet which is 5 minutes walk uphill from the hotel. The seating is outside, so dress well, it is cold in the morning.

Cons:

It is quite pricey for Taiwan, but the hotel options in Alishan are very limited.
The first thing they do at check in is informing you about 5 different things you may get fined for - it may be a local habit, but it definitely doesn't make you feel welcome.
The most notable rule is that you may not throw toilet paper into the toilet. I understand that there are good reasons for it, but in this case (especially at this price point) they should be emptying the toilet paper bin daily - which they don't.
Another rule is that they turn on the heating only when the temperature outside drops to 7 degrees. During my stay the room was just warm enough (apart from the icy cold bathroom floor) but I can imagine it gets uncomfortably cold in the room in some periods.

Okay place to stay for 1 night!
Pros:

Location was good close to the train station.

Cons:

Very basic room. No aircon. No fridge in the room. Breakfast was in a communal place with other guests from the surrounding hotels near the train station and the food very unpalatable.

Hmmm... overcharges and under-delivers
Pros:

The bed was comfortable and the wifi was OK - not the fastest but still quite OK.
The shower was hot.

Cons:

This accommodation is located at the lower level of the village so be prepared for stairs if you have heavy luggage. While one woman on the desk was helpful the younger one was cold and officious and the only unpleasant receptionist I have had to deal with during all my two weeks in Taiwan. This place cost a bomb and didn't even have heating.
I would never stay here again nor recommend it to anyone. Really, having done this now, I realise that you'd be better to stay at Fenqishu and catch the 9 a.m. bus up to Alishan (which takes 1 hour) and then spend the 2.5 - 3 hours it takes to wander around Alishan NP and then head back down to Fenqishu, and either stay another night there or head for Chiayi. A room in Fenqishu/Chiayi will cost you half the price of the over-inflated prices up in Alishan.

Pros:

I had read existing reviews and was prepared to spend one night in a gritty property because of the location only. I was very pleasantly surprised to be in a newly renovated, spacious room on the 3rd floor. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Before driving into town, You have to pull over on HWY18 at Alishan village and show your reservation to the town traffic officers. Otherwise you will be waved on to continue down the hwy with nowhere to stop and turn back!!

Pros:

離阿里山火車站近，看日出，遊園區都方便，有餐廳和7-11在附近，吃喝沒問題，房間也舒適，浴廁乾濕分離，最優的是有免治馬桶.

Cons:

衛生紙不能丟馬桶，若阻塞要罰款，有些嚇人。
