Room was OK
We wanted to love this place. Booked for my birthday. The photos, the history, the promise of a "castle experience" — total illusion. What you actually get is a masterclass in mismanagement. Memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Our room itself was actually fine — nice bed, decent bathroom. But the extras read like a checklist of what a hotel isn't supposed to skimp on: no fridge, basic tea and coffee with no milk (BYO cow, apparently), no food room service, and you can't even run a tab — very much "cash up front,." Furnishings tired, corridors with cracks in walls, nowhere near what's advertised. Very Overpriced, in reality, a 2-star hotel not a 4 star castle.
Spa: we cancelled on sight. It looked unhygienic — not somewhere I fancied immersing my body, thanks.
Dinner: also cancelled. The restaurant looked tired, and reviews from actual guests were scathing. Turns out that's not paranoia — the owners were fined £40,000 in 2023 after inspectors found decomposed food, a leaking fridge, filthy mops, and thick grease in the kitchen (North Wales Live). We walked five minutes to Jacques Wine Bar instead — genuinely excellent.
Service: honestly, we felt sorry for the staff — young, poorly trained, overwhelmed, or simply nowhere to be found. Management doesn't seem to invest in training or retaining good people, and it shows.
Worth noting: many of the 5-star reviews propping up this rating are from "Local Guides" racking up points, not actual guests. Compare them to the one- and two-star reviews from people who clearly stayed .
Save your money. check reviews across all sites, not just this one.
Beautiful views amazing garden, peacock and other animals amazing……
Spa is extra plus point
Room was good, food was very good. Beautiful setting
Difficult to park as here was an event going on.
Wet room floor flooded when taking a shower, which required some tactical planning for subsequent visits
Beautiful place
Breakfast could have been better and rooms were very hot - air conditioning didn’t work very well
Grounds were beautiful, peacocks were an added bonus
Breakfast if you had cooked breakfast was amazing , I do not eat cooked breakfast and the choice of continental was very poor. At first I saw 3 tiers of what I thought was pastries, disappointment set in once I got closer as there was 3 tiers of small croissant, even the weetabix had run out on the second morning. Put bluntly continental breakfast was tragic.
I absolutely loved this place , gorgeous castle beautifully maintained . I loved exploring both the castle and the town
The bed needed replacing .it wasn't very comfortable (or maybe just the ghost of lady grey;) keeping me awake)
Beautiful location
Location excellent
Helpful staff
Atmospheric surroundings
Rather chaotic breakfast (28 June, 9:15). Ran out of bowls, plates, cups, coffee, fruit and pastries at various times. All replenished by helpful staff when asked, but no apparent system for monitoring stock levels.
Some decor rather worn and needs updating.
Expensive- £250 plus for one night B&B
Good location in lovely grounds peacocks wander around.
The room definitely needed an update it was very tired
Location and staff
Cleanliness was poor and upon our check-in in to our room we found an empty used pizza box in the wardrobe door, completely unacceptable and clearly the room hadn't been thoroughly cleaned and checked upon our arrival
Room was fantastic size real luxurious needed a bit of tlc but still very good
Traveled with our dog £20 surcharge no dog bowls or treats in room just a jar of dog biscuits at reception could treat the dogs a bit better for the money
I love the castle ruins. What’s not to like about a medieval castle?
Nothing wrong. Excellent experience.
