A friendly family run pension.
Unfortunately, a European visitor would find the culinary and sanitary conditions inadequate.
The experience was really bad from check in, as there were issues with my room reservation. the hostel insisted that i did not book an attached bathroom. I find the room description very misleading as my booking only mentioned a private bathroom was included but this "private bathroom" was allocated across the hallway from actual bedroom! Eventually this was resolved by insisting that I speak with the hostel reservation manager. Originally I was asked to pay more ...
The room provided was basic, clean but there was no provision of bath towel, or even toilet paper! I had to make request with hostel staff. The worst part of the hostel has a kill switch and the minute you leave your room and return, your air conditioning unit does not power on. You have to manually ask the Hostel staff.
Clearly, there isn't much trust that hostel guest will turn off the air-conditioning when they leave their rooms. Overall the atmosphere feels unloved and definitely not very family. I reckon, you can definitely find a better hostel in downtown cairo for a better price and condition. There is no lift to the 6th floor. so the lift bring you to the 5th floor which you need to walk up a flight of stairs. On my check out as the lift was misfunctioning I had to bring 3 luggages down 6 flights of stairs without any hostel assistance! Definitely very Family!!
My reservation was January 18-23, so I was supposed to leave the 24th. They convinced me to leave the 23rd, and so I checked out the 23rd.!!?! I shared the bathroom, the shower, and the sink... It's a hostel..
When I booked the hotel's rating was "Exceptional, or Wonderful!" It's not.. it's okay..
Was the best experience, is clean ,safe, and the owner is a very nice person, he treat you like family, thank you so much
cute small hotel, located in a level on an urbanic building. close to center, close to public transportation. it's not a fancy place, good for travellers who don't expect too much from their hotel and wants a place to sleep an shower. wifi is good. i took a room withoutshower, it was ok for me . stuff are excellent, nice and helpfull. islam and ghassan, the 2 receptionist guys are extreamly nice and cute. There was a breakfast but I didn't took it, I preferred the Egyptian street food…I will go cack there on my next trip in cairo
I was a solo tourist. The location is very good; close to the intersection of Adli street and Mohammad Farid. It is on the top floor of a old building. Room is clean but need some finishing work, bathroom needs some accessories like towel, soap, shampoo etc. All staffs are helpful. Thanks to Mr Mo & Islam. Mr Mustafa arranged my tour to Luxor and Dahab which was good. Thanks to him.
Cairo Museum,River Nile,Train Station,Khan e khalili all are within one and half km and you can walk.
Mohamed and Eslam very friendly and helpful. You come in and it is smelling good and it is very clean. We feeled very good there. The Breakfast is nice with a hot Egg, i loved it really.Mohamed speak English very good. Its a really nice Hotel(Hostel) for a really fair price. Free Wifi also included. We saw many bad Hotels in Cairo with much animals and Dirt. Here at Family Palace and Travel Joy Hostel all is clean!Thank you Mohamed and Eslam!!!!
I was very happy with my stay at Family Palace/Travel Joy. I was traveling solo and on a budget, but I was very impressed with the quality of the room/service. The family is very warm and welcoming. They helped with any issues I had, gave me great tips on where to go in the city, and welcomed me in instantly as a solo traveler.
The location was great, very accessible to tourist spots. You are right in the heart of downtown Cairo and can live like a local. There are street food stands, taxis, pharmacies, cafes, restaurants, and liquor stores nearby.
The only things to keep in mind that may put off some travelers: the lobby is a smoking area and air ventilation is not great, although the room's AC is perfect! Also, only two workers speak English well--you may catch some staff who are perfectly friendly, but may need to call Mostafa to translate. Also, the shared bathrooms are nice quality for a typical Egyptian home--that said, they use a bidet and do not provide toilet paper, and the hot water can be spotty. Of course, this did not impact my stay whatsoever. I loved this hostel but would like to point these things out, as I had friends in another room who were not as keen on these points.
Overall I would highly recommend this hostel! The breakfast is nice and staff are always happy to sit down for a cup of tea or coffee with you.
Listen, I understand the whole "you get what you pay for" thing. But this place is disgusting. They call themselves "non-smoking"...which would be true if the entire staff didn't chain smoke and the smoke didn't come into all the rooms and bathrooms. There is a man and a very pregnant woman who sit in the common space and smoke around the clock. I'm not exaggerating...they NEVER LEAVE. So our room and bathroom just reeked of stale smoke the entire trip. Also, there are 180 steps to climb when the elevator doesn't work, which is pretty often. One worker is pretty friendly. It's in a great area of town for seeing real, non-touristy Cairo. Street food nearby is awesome. But there's no good reason for how dirty this place is. I would guess it's been a good 20 years since it's even seen a fresh coat of paint. Zero hot water for showering. We moved to a hotel in Zamalek for a few dollars more a night and the difference was amazing. Save yourself the misery and start off there.
Me and my husband stayed at the Family Palace Hostel, in Cairo, and were delighted with the friendly atmosphere of the place. The place is run by a wonderful family whose members, Mr. Saad and his sons, Islam and Ghassan, together with Mohamed Aboutaleb, made us feel at home. Our room was big and clear, modestly furnished, but confortable enough. With a great location, right in the center of the city, at walking distance to Tahrir Square, and very affordable, this hotel is a good choice for travellers on a budget. The hotel's manager, Mostafa Hashad, also helped us to organize and assisted us on our travels throughout Egypt. Thanks, Mostafa! Please send our regards to all Family Palace staff!
Awesome stay, friendly and knowledgeable staff, clean, good location. Close to the Nile, transportation, great food, and good cafes. Single guy traveling alone, Couldn't ask for more. For Egypt, it's impressive. Prices are great. Worth a shot.
the hotel is very very clean and the room is wide and comfortable but what make them special is the way of how the staff and the owner dealing with customers they dealing with you as you are their friend , so if you are travel alone and had no plans you can easy go to family palace hotel and the staff will do his best to help you for making a plane all over Egypt with unbelievable price and best service because they have special deals with local companies which give them great discount.
One I check in to family palace hotel I feel like I am with my family the people there dealing with you as you are onof there family member and as you are stranger they give you very good advises And special services for you saving you from street hustlers who are very clever for ripp you off.
The hotel is small but very clean and the location is fantastic.
nice place and the stuff over there is amazing we had too much fun and they are lovely ........ rooms are clean i had stayed in two rooms and was clean ... also the securety is good and the safty box at the room and that.s was so nice i have enjoyed my vecation in cairo thank u so much familly palace hostel much love ♥♡

Beware of first impressions: the entrance is down an alley, the building looks sketchy, and the elevator is from a different century. But inside, Mostafa, Saad, and their family make you feel as welcome as their own blood. The lobby seems more like a living room, where you will never want for tea, cigarettes, or anything else you could possibly want. No lie, they even offered to go to the ATM to get out money for me - and they are among about 5 people in the world that I would trust not to skim anything off the top.
Mostafa is great with setting up tours, excursions, and local fixers/drivers for the more adventurous. It also helps that they pick you up at the airport for free for stays of more than 3 nights.
I just spent a week and a half in Egypt, 6 nights of which were in Cairo. When I went down to the Red Sea, I missed this place the way I missed home. Words cannot describe how awesome this place is, so you'll have to see for yourself.
The location is handy to get around Cairo down town. Small hotel but rooms and shower clean. staff are very kind and helpful, although they can’t speak English but they try to help you by calling Mostafa who speaks very good English. Mostafa is a nice and friendly guy, up for help and advise at any time. Not a huge lobby area to chill out, but a cup of nice Egyptian tea in a very friendly atmosphere is available. safety 100%! So, highly recommended for budget travelers and families.
I stayed at this hotel after staying at Mercure Cairo Le Sphinx. It may not be luxurious in comparison, but here are the reasons why I prefer it:
1. Better location
2. Wifi in room (not just lobby)
3. More outlets
4. Better lighting
5. Attentive staff!!!
Number 5 was very important to me, especially as a solo female traveler. Mostafa was caring and attentive before, during, and after my stay. He arranged tours and a great driver for me, and even accompanied me on a felluca ride on my last night in Cairo! I found Mostafa, his staff, and the guests of the hotel to be good people so I feel lucky to have stayed here. The family treatment and price of the hotel makes it an unbeatable value.
