Review – Hótel Jökulsárlón / Glacier Lagoon Hotel
I normally never write reviews, neither positive nor negative ones. I travel a lot and have stayed in many hotels around the world. However, in this case I felt compelled to write my first review because I honestly cannot understand how this hotel receives so many highly positive ratings.
First, the positive:
The hotel itself is architecturally beautiful and the location in the Icelandic nature is truly impressive. At first glance everything looks modern and stylish, which makes the disappointment afterwards even greater.
Considering that rooms cost around €400 per night, one would expect certain basic standards. For example, I would expect at least a bottle of water in the room, or at least an easy way to access drinking water. Surprisingly, this was not the case.
The service, however, was the most disappointing part of our stay. I have rarely experienced staff that appeared so unmotivated and irritated. At times it almost felt uncomfortable to ask for anything because requests were often met with visible annoyance. For a hotel in this price category, that is simply not acceptable.
The restaurant was another major issue. Of course we understand that we are on an island and that logistics, transportation and staffing costs in Iceland are different from those on mainland Europe. Higher prices are therefore understandable to some degree.
However, what is difficult to understand is the huge imbalance between price and quality. The food itself is quite simple, yet the prices are extremely high. During our stay we spent over €200 for dinner, which would normally set expectations for a very high-end dining experience. Unfortunately, the food did not come close to justifying those prices.
At the same time, there are practically no alternatives nearby, as the next town with restaurants is about an hour away in either direction.
