A top 3 hotel in Cartagena with highly attentive staff.
Pros:

The staff were very attentive, they helped us to store luggage before and even after the trip, as well as assisting to take luggage to the nearby port. The hotel itself is a real gem and architectural marvel, lots of history. Food is fantastic, and an amazing rooftop swimming pool with a bar. Will definitely return!

Second to none in Cartagena old town!
Pros:

This intimate 15-room hotel is housed in a beautifully preserved 14th-century historic building. The owner, Carolina, has maintained the original character of the house—complete with stunning wall paintings—while transforming it into a truly serene and elegant sanctuary. The hotel features two pools: a smaller saltwater pool on the top-floor terrace and a freshwater pool in the courtyard below. Its location is unbeatable, right in the heart of the old town, just behind the cathedral. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated, with very comfortable beds and large, well-appointed bathrooms. Thoughtful details abound, from the abundance of thick towels to the beautifully scented soaps. Rarely have I encountered such genuinely friendly and service-minded staff. Everyone went above and beyond to assist with all our inquiries—from tracking down a post office (no easy task in Colombia!) to arranging a late check-out. The food and drinks at Casa Caroline are outstanding. Ingredients are locally sourced, healthy, and thoughtfully prepared, resulting in truly memorable and well-balanced flavors. I hope we have the chance to come back one day!

Beautiful & with lots of potential
Pros:

The hotel is undeniably beautiful, with a stunning courtyard and rooftop that are true highlights. The room was well equipped, with a good TV, a very useful handheld steamer, and excellent storage — including a spacious locker suitable for laptops, cameras, and valuables. The bathrobes and slippers were also gorgeous and a lovely touch.

We also really appreciated the help when we accidentally left a wallet behind — the team organised delivery to our next hotel in a different town, which was greatly appreciated.

Cons:

The hotel is still quite new and a few practical changes would quickly and significantly improve the guest experience.

If travelling with elderly guests, note that access to downstairs rooms is narrow and precarious. The shower floors are slippery and lack grab rails, which is a safety concern. A bent rug in the room caused a fall, though staff did remove it promptly once mentioned.

There are also privacy and layout issues: a shared area directly outside our bedroom was allowed to be booked as a business meeting space, with a toilet next to the room. This led to unexpected noise in the morning and felt more like an office area than a guest corridor — meetings should be properly enclosed.

Downstairs rooms face the street, with a dark external screen added for separation, meaning curtains stay closed and windows can’t be opened without noise.

Comfort could be improved: bedding felt overly layered and slippery, and better pillow options (firmer or foam) would help.

Service was mixed. Reception staff were kind, but English is very limited. Even in Spanish, breakfast service lacked basic greetings, explanations, and menu knowledge, suggesting more training is needed. Communication is very difficult for non-Spanish speakers.

Food and drink availability was inconsistent, with many items regularly unavailable. The dual QR-code menu system was also awkward; physical menus would be much more

Finally, staff had no real recommendations for restaurants, tours, or activities — when asked, they simply googled options. A small, well-curated guide with a few trusted restaurants and tours would add real value.
