The YMCA rooms are bare bones - very Spartan but clean and comfortable. The first night I was there the lights in my room did not work, but they were fixed the next morning. The staff is freindly and efficient, and the place is a four minute walk to the Hawaii Convention Center. A big downside is that since the rooms are not air conditioned, you have to keep the windows open, and the street is EXTREMELY noisy. There are motorcycles and muscle cars revving their engines as they drive on the major road in front of the residence. I suggest asking for a room away from the street. The noise dies down around midnight. Ala Moana Park is about a ten minute walk away, and the ocean beach there is quite good. The residence has what I suspect are some long term residents, many of whom may be on public assistance. However, the YMCA requires that you pass a background check and a check of the sex offender registry before you arrive, so the place is safe and secure. Don't be put off by the sharps containers on every floor as well as an AED and naloxone at the front desk. After the initial small shock when I first saw the interior and my room, I quite enjoyed staying there. There is a nice, large patio out front and free coffee in the lobby. The bed was comfortable, and all the plumbing in my private bathroom worked well. There is housekeeping once a week. There are also rooms that use community bathrooms. Across the street is the very large Ala Moan shopping center with food courts.
Clean room. NO air conditioning. Had a fan. They had trouble finding a key to a room. The building outside the room is old and dingy. There are a variety of people that are at the lower end of the scale, this is a place where people go who can't afford better. Staff were nice and friendly. They require a security check based on your ID, they check a database for sex offenders.
Huge mall (Ala Moana) that is very nice right across the street. 3 lunch trucks right next door. City buses are excellent, you can take one to Waikiki Beach. Ala Moana Beach park is close.
Best deal for single traveler in Honolulu! My single room was clean and near the elevator. Grant was kind and helped me get checked in. Exchanged my electric fan, gave tips on places to eat. Diego was also very kind, recommended the food truck nearby, the fish tacos were great! Busy street, but got quieter after 9:30. Just used eye mask and earplugs to get good sleep. Ala Moana Center is across the street, 3-min walk to Liliha Bakery for breakfast, close to beach, close to bus stop, If you have a car, best deal for overnight parking (covered) $10/nite on site! No A/C but with a fan (provided, and a USB personal fan, was comfortable at night. I needed to iron my clothes for a memorial service and they provided an iron with standup board. After second night, they cleaned my room, fresh sheets and towel. IMHO this is a hidden jem for hotel: 8-min walk to Convention Center, near to Waikiki and town. Highly recommended! Great alternative to hostel!
Nice location nice hospitality rooms are nice got a good night's sleep
The staff here was extremely welcoming. Definitely satisfied with my stay. The parking was $10, spent the difference on food and shopping- very quiet dorm-like floor.
YMCA offers affordable safe housing for people who may not have the ability to get conventional housing for whatever reason. I stayed here until my apartment was ready. It was an affordable flexible alternative to the high price hotels that surround it. The building is aged, but patched together like an heirloom quilt offering warmth and comfort. The staff are just as charming. Coffee and water in the lounge, and washer and dryer on the 5th floor. Not to mention you are in the heart of the busy downtown area. Shopping, restaurants, and of course the crystal clear ocean. You get to experience Hilton's Friday night fireworks without paying Hilton prices. Also the food trucks outside your door. You have privacy in your room, shared bathroom, but if you are a young explorer this is a good alternative to vacation on a dime. Don't sleep on the YMCA, instead sleep at the YMCA.
The place looks like its kinda falling apart could benefit from renovations.
YMCA is not a stay like a hotel, nor a motel, not a hostel. This place is predominantly a community shelter and youth cheap option, considering the advantage of be in a very central position. The cleaning is definitely poor, but staff do their best to make this a better place every day. Lots of community initiatives promoting to give a safe healthy space to live, with affordable pricing to those ones most disadvantaged.
Very old and dated
My prior reviews were accurate at the time but staying for multiple days, the combination of 24/7 road noise and uncomfortable temperatures even with the oscillating fan made my stay pretty tough.
Maybe I’m just homesick and irritable haha. But it’s a decent, affordable stay for Honolulu close to the largest open air shopping center in the world.
I have stayed at, and continue to stay at this property because of its no frills rooms, great location, and privacy. Accommodation in Honolulu is extremely expensive, and this property is affordable for all travelers. Anytime I’m traveling through Honolulu on the way to my destination, I choose this property.
I understand it was cheap but the place was so dirty! The lobby area looked clean but once you got to the room, it was so dusty, drawings on the wall and the windows was super dirty. It was dorm feeling indeed but this was worse! There was mold in the shower and shower curtain. This has to be there dirtiest place I’ve ever been. Also there was a ball of hair on the ground. The room was super hot.

Extremely bare bones but a place to sleep, nice staff, and a 15 minute walk from Waikiki beach
Good and comfy. Friendly, helpful, and amazing staff.
The bed is really itchy, no air conditioning and it’s so loud from the street.
NA
It’s great to have the opportunity to visit somewhere that is very expensive, Honolulu, Hawaii, AND to be able to find an affordable place to stay, YMCA.
The front staff was very rude and kept saying she just started and didnt know anything. I expected a simple room for the price but didnt find anything very clean and the pillow was awful. The bed was actually ok but since theres no AC and only shutter windows you could hear everything and everyone outside at all hours. I would not stay here again.
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was extremely basic -, no aircon and clearly not the room featured in the photos. Pretty much anything metal was rusty. The one bathroom per floor was pathetic: one of two toilets was out of order and, as I recall, two of five sinks were out of order. I do a lot of travel on the fairly cheap and this was probably the second worst place I've stayed. You do not want to know about the worst! ;(
