Managed by a private host
The location was reasonably close to Hilo, 11 miles, where we needed to do many things and other places we needed to get to.
The bathroom could have been bigger and the shower was small with two shower heads and low water pressure. There was makeshift door locking (pipes in the tracks) while in the room and a padlock outside the back door when you leave. Although we didn't feel the need to lock up when we left.
There was a friendly old lady that gave me some eggs.
The room had 2 doors to the outside but no locks. The bed was uncomfortable. The room was kinda clean. I did not get the wifi password sent until the next morning. I only stayed 1 out of the 3 nights that I had booked, and rather checked into a hotel to have reliable wifi and a lockable and clean space.
Had everything we needed with a few extra goodies supplied.
Nothing.
Doors don't lock. More security cameras than a bank vault. Owner claims it is safe despite feeling like you're in a cartel drug compound. Room had chicken wire at the bottom of the incomplete wall and spider webs for days. Apparently there's snakes around the property as well.
Me and my Mrs didn't end up staying after we saw the state of the property and the fact that you can't lock the room to sleep in or leave your valuables in is a massive red flag. Honestly I've never felt so unsafe in any accomodation, and I've stayed in multiple third world countries around the world.
The host was an absolute gem—truly one of the sweetest and kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. She went above and beyond to make my stay special, bringing me breakfast every morning with such care and warmth. On the day of checkout, her thoughtful assurance that there was no need to rush made me feel so valued and at ease.
The property itself is beautifully secluded, offering a serene retreat away from the hustle and bustle. That said, I’d highly recommend arranging for a rental car, as the distance from the airport and the remote location can make transportation a bit tricky. While ridesharing options like Uber may be available, they’re not always reliable here and could end up costing more than the convenience and freedom of having your own car.
The host is really amazing. The place is cosy and confortable and the service is great!
At first I found it a bit of a strange setup, unit at the back of a house. 2 sliding doors, no key provided. However the place was safe, being at the back, and there was always someone there. No aircon but a fan, sleeping with the doors left a bit open kept it cool enough tho.
Fridge, microwave, cooktop and TV all working fine :)
Overall it turned out to be OK.
No shops or whatsoever close by. A bit of road noise in the morning because of sleeping with the doors a bit open.
The aapartment was very comfortable with strong internet and a kitchen stocked with cooking supplies such as a hot plate, pots and pans, microwave, coffee maker, electric kettle, and all the dishes and other paraphernaliayou might need for cooking. Also, the host generously provided eggs for breakfast and offered milk.

A complete, quiet and private apartment. This unit was ideal for me. I stayed a week and the unit being close to my daughter and grandkids and their school was perfect. It is small but so am I, so I had no issue. I did not see an air conditioner but that was not an issue with cool nights and mornings in late May. Friendly hosts and hospitality here. Access is hidden off Keaau-Pahoa Highway but it’s easy. I forgot the intersection street but there’s a traffic light and hairpin Right up the driveway. I’ll be staying here from now on when I come to visit my kids and also has perfect access to Volcano NP and Hilo.
They provided some delicious pancakes on two mornings and helped us get to and from the airport as well as offering a few rides to town. They were very kind. The place was fairly clean when we arrived.
The cot provided was very uncomfortable. There were no ice cube trays in the frig. We could have used some racks for our wet towels and some more hangars for our clothes. The rain was so intense one night, that the roof leaked in the kitchen.
My brother said
Their respectable and everything was perfect. I had the place all to myself.
