I had another very pleasant stay at Hotel Montreal and, as with my previous visits, the experience was consistently excellent. I stayed in a Junior Suite for two nights while attending a family occasion, and despite arriving very late at around 2am, the check‑in process was smooth and welcoming.
The team is always friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful, which is one of the main reasons I keep returning. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with all the amenities needed for a short stay. Everything was exactly as I’ve come to expect from Hotel Montreal — reliable and hassle‑free.
The booking process was also very easy, making the whole experience seamless from start to finish. I consistently have very good stays here and would happily recommend this hotel to all types of travelers, whether visiting for business, leisure, or family occasions.
Lovely room, clean and comfortable, super location
Nothing to dislike
We stayed two nights at the Hotel Montreal. The location is great — an easy walk to the fabulous botanic gardens, to the park, to the Riverside Market food mart and the downtown shops. Our room was spacious and comfortable, though pretty standard when it came to furnishings and amenities. The fitness center was average. E-Bikes are available to guests, which is a nice amenity, but they are stored in the fitness center. The staff was friendly and helpful, and we had no problems or complaints. Overall, the hotel is fine, though nothing special, and I think a bit pricey relative to the overall quality of the experience.
Nice location - 10 minutes walk to central Christchurch. Evening meal good.
Entrance and welcome underwhelming - more like the entrance to a backpackers than a 4 star hotel. Totally ignored by staff at breakfast . Not approached or offered anything. Buffet offerings very average.
Blasting a spray cleanser next to our table while eating was pretty unprofessional.
Great room with great staff and food. Great place to stay in the city, close walk to everywhere
A good hotel in a very good location on the outskirts of Christchurch. A warm welcome, good clean room. Good parking facilities. Only problem was the restaurant closes at 21:00 as does the bar. We had to get a meal via room service but this was good when it arrived to the room.
Beautiful room, comfy bed, welcoming and friendly staff. Excellent restaurant
My wife & I recently travelled to Christchurch to attend a conference. While searching for places to stay discovered Hotel Montreal, which is ideally situated a minutes' walk from beautiful Hagley Park, and a 5-minute walk to the Convention Centre and Riverside Eateries. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. I'd have to say the room we were given felt more like an apartment than a hotel room, and having a balcony was a bonus I hadn't expected. As we had hired a rental car, I was delighted to discover Hotel Montreal has ample off-street parking - and unlike some hotels, parking was free! We had a meal one night in the restaurant and found the ambience just right. The menu was excellent and I was spoilt for choice - being indecisive I could have chosen 3 of the main courses. If you are eating in, you won't be disappointed. With the central city park - Hagley Park being so close, we went walking most mornings, and evenings to the nearby Botanical Gardens and Heritage Arts Centre. I don't often write reviews, but I think my stay at Hotel Montreal deserves a mention. I thoroughly recommend staying here for the location, cleanliness & presentation of the hotel & room, and wonderful staff.
I will be upfront - but for our experience with the specific room and situation, I might have given this at least a four star review. The fact there are three stars here is that despite our experience, I can see the charm of this hotel. Polite staff, willing to help. Location is just outside the main city, but yet walking distance to so many things.
However, whatever you do, do NOT stay in the Tack Rooms. Tack rooms - there are two of them- are these large suites which look great in pictures. But that is where it stops. The room we were in - Montreal - was just poorly designed. Such a large room but no closet! No storage of any kind for your clothes! Furniture is low to the ground - great for a kid perhaps (and looks nice) but totally not usable without killing your back.
But here is the worst part - the rooms are detached from the hotel. And totally exposed to streets outside. To get to the rooms you can take a short alley on the back of the hotel; but that alley has a gate at the end, which from desk locks down at night. The whole experience makes you feel a bit insecure. Now, this is Christchurch - very, very safe city. So, it was just a feeling.... until...our last night. We had a very early departure the next morning and needed our sleep. Just around midnight, we heard some noise outside; and then the door opened - and some stranger was in our room. We yelled - and immediately we heard the person mutter an apology and close the door. Can't really describe how we felt at that moment - being awakened was one thing but to have someone be in your room... well, we called the front desk to figure out what happened. Turns out it was the front desk person who had opened the door (meant to bring luggage for the other Tack room). Needless to say, our night was destroyed. The next morning as we are checking out, we mentioned what happened. It was clear that the new front desk person knew. However, rather than doing the right thing, it turned into a discussion of "we can give you free breakfast", and ended with some discount off the room for the final night.
I have been in customer service before. Mistakes happen. Your guests don't want just another apology. The right thing to do would have been - before we even said anything on checkout - is to have the manager come over, apologize and say, "we destroyed one of our nights, we are not going to make you pay for it." That would have been the end of it.
Good facilities great location
Nothing
Went to the restaurant at hotel Montreal. Was served by a super friendly and helpful waitress called Lucy. Great food, great service!
Tack room was large and spacious and felt very comfortable. Had everything we needed.
Certain parts of the room were left bit unclean like cobwebs in the bathroom, excess dust on furniture, under the bed and around the mirror. Also, the side door along the walkway was left unlocked, we realised after our first night because we were walking along the walkway and decided to check the door for no particular reason in which we were shocked to discover it was unlocked the whole time. Corner tack rooms do back onto the street and privacy and noise can become bit of an issue.
Continental breakfast was adequate, not really up to the standard of the hotel in general
