Pros:

I have stayed twice at Alfavit Hotel now, one year apart. This is a decent, cheap hotel. The ladies at the front desk are quite nice, speak varying levels of English, but take the effort to understand what you want and help out.

The rooms are decent. Clean for the most part, but my most recent room had a wet spot next to a wall that I think was the bathroom of the adjoining room. The bathrooms are tiny. Water has a good flow, and is hot. Beds are basic, but comfortable. The rooms do not have good air flow, and keeping the windows open brings in a lot of road noise. My last room had the air conditioner in a position where the air did not directly hit me, which was good, but not all the rooms are like that.

The rooms also have a safe and a small fridge, which is nice for this price. Breakfast is good, but there is not much for vegetarians (like me). They will give you porridge, instead of eggs and sausages that others get. Besides that, there is bread, butter/cheese, compote, yoghurt, tea/coffee and biscuits.

The location is a bit weird. Nothing much in terms of sights nearby, except for the Peter and Paul Fortress, which is a bit of a walk. It was convenient for me since it was close to where I wanted to be. The drawbridges are a pain if you plan to stay out at night, or have a night flight in/out - you need to plan your bridge crossings. The neighbourhood seems industrial, but is safe. Cars do seem to get broken in though, on the side streets nearby.

Simple and cheap hotel
Pros:

I stayed in this hotel from June 1-5, 2017. I booked it based on the existing ratings. I found it to be a simple hotel, good for the price.

Pros:
1. Very friendly and helpful staff, they tried to help me with everything despite a limited knowledge of English.
2. It has all the needed amenities, including breakfast.
3. It is clean, including the bathrooms.
4. Very hot water and great water pressure in the shower.

Cons:
1. Limited breakfast options for vegetarians.
2. No cupboard in the room for keeping clothes (it does have drawers).
3. Beds are spartan, and the comforters are somewhat small.
4. No lift - could be a problem for people with lots of luggage.

Lovely staff, terrible breakfast
Pros:

Not a great location to stay in. Only a short walk to metro, but the hotel itself feels like it is in the middle of a wasteland and there is very little close by. Not nice to walk back to late at night. Staff were lovely, but I would definitely recommend staying closer to the centre, especially with the bridges over the Neva rising at night.
