Good value for money, spacious room close to train station
Pros:

Clean and spacious room, comfortable bed, staff polite, great location being in walking distance of train station and close to eateries.

Cons:

Gym equipment not working optimally. Would have been nice to have a variety of fruit for breakfast. No butter and yoghurt was offered. Aside from that a good selection and variety of items.

An unusual name, but a very good hotel in the centre of old Taichung
Pros:

We wanted a hotel very close to Taichung train station as we only had one full day (two nights) in old Taichung for sight-seeing, and we wanted to be near to the old Taichung centre. The hotel is virtually opposite the main (and old historic) train stations - within easy walking distance, even with a large bag. In the streets near the hotel were multiple eating establishments - refreshments, drinks or meals were easily available, with most being 'street' food establishments.

Booking-in was relatively easy. Some of the reception staff spoke little English, whilst others had a better command. Despite some small language difficulties, check-in was efficiently carried out by the helpful staff. Google Translate of English to Chinese Traditional works well if required

Our room was very pleasant, comfortable and clean - it was well laid out and in good decoration. There was a good secure safety box. The beds were very comfortable.

The breakfast was very comprehensive, covering a complete range of tastes (both Western and Asian) - the food was well-presented and tasty.

An iron and ironing board was quickly provided on request to our room - very good coordination between reception and house-keeping and very good housekeeping as well.

There is a free-to-use laundry facility (washing & drying) - a chance to catch up on some over-due domestic challenges. The reception can provide washing powder at a nominal sum (TWD $30 = £0.75). A very useful facility!

Fellow travelers will not go wrong if using Hotel 53.

Excelleny location and comfortable stay
Pros:

Excellent location near the train station, easy to locate. Rooms were also generally comfortable. It had cable TV which was a great plus.

Cons:

Bathroom was a little small but not a major issue
