The Tick Hotel

Sorry for the other, rather above-average reviews of this hotel. For me, apart from a moldy guesthouse in northeastern Germany, it was the most pathetic accommodation I've ever experienced in terms of value for money. False promises and/or misleading, imprecisely worded offers on the hotel's website didn't prevent a few arguments. It started with a 25% markup through Booking.com. My supposed bargain of $65 per night via Booking.com at what was supposedly the best hotel in Kampala turned out to be a room without a window, microwave, iron and ironing board, and no free access to the swimming pool, which led to an upgrade and the first room change. The hotel advertises different offers and prices on various websites.


After paying an extra $10 per night, we entered the second room, which had a balcony and free access to the pool. Still no microwave, iron, or ironing board. Instead, there was a broken electrical outlet, rendering my phone charger unusable for the first few minutes. Furthermore, the room hadn't been thoroughly cleaned, and some of the plumbing fixtures were loose and not properly screwed in. Unfortunately, the mosquito nets on one side of the balcony were already broken. Since we had no information about the water heater and how to use it, our first shower was a rather refreshing experience.


In addition to the cold water, the shower cubicle wasn't watertight, resulting in an immediate wet bathroom floor. Since I couldn't resist complaining again at reception after paying the $10 surcharge, we were put in the third room on our first night.


On the third day, after returning to our hotel room, the refrigerator was switched off. I immediately suspected the staff and looked for the hidden camera. After some wiggling and switching it on and off, the appliance started working again, and I almost forgot about it. The following night, we were woken by a strange noise. After some searching, we found a small mouse at 3 a.m.

The facilities such as the gym should be included in the charge. Our towels smelled of smoke and the shower had very little water pressure.

The facilities are not included in the stay price. And all rooms are stated as having air conditioning but they do not and we had to pay extra to be upgraded to an aircon room. Plus you pay to visit the gym

Poor WiFi

The shower over the bath was not the best. Couldn't get the right temperature either too hot or cold.

Charged extra for using the pool and gym yet I was a hotel guest , room was on the 4th floor and the elevator was out of service so I had to use the stairs, very unreliable WiFi connection especially if you’re using Apple devices, nobody showed up for cleaning or provide extra bottled water there’s no kettle or anything provided in the room to make a tea/coffee

I Was offered a dark room with no window which I declined!.
A member of staff told me that there was no other standard rooms available. She insisted I should pay more and take up a luxury room! I refused and asked for a refund. At this point a room with a window was magically available!
