Feeling home and welcome in Addis Abeba: The Lion's Den Hotel
Pros:

well located, perfectly equipped the Lion's Den Hotel has major assets: perfect welcome and spacy, clean and quiet rooms and the hotel management lives its commitment to make you feel home at their place in Addis - I was impressed by both, the professional performance and the personal atmosphere. Thank you, The Lion's Den Hotel for these perfect four days in Addis!

Home away from home
Pros:

I first stayed at Lions Den in 2010 and have been going back at least 2 times a year whenever I come to Ethiopia for business or on holiday. Very friendly and professional staff, clean rooms, efficient service, reasonable price, great location, consistently excellent food.. What else can a traveller ask for? All the above are reasons why I continue to choose to stay at Lions Den. For me Lions Den has and continues to be home away from home.

Fairly quiet, good value, central
Pros:

I spent nearly four months here (on and off) while on assignment with an NGO.

The long-term rate ($65 a night including breakfast) was very good value for a hotel in the middle of Addis. I had a double bedroom, sitting room (with flat screen TV), bathroom and a sort of kitchen. The "kitchen" has a double sink (cold water only), small fridge and loads of kitchen cupboards but strangely no actual cooking facilities or even a kettle. I ended up buying my own.

The hotel is in a fairly quiet area of greenery, which is hard to find in a city that is rapidly becoming a concrete jungle. The Greek Club with its excellent and good value restaurant is just across the road. The hotel has its own restaurant which Is best at providing local food (injeera etc) - not to everyone's taste.

Most rooms look out over an area of unkempt greenery which will probably become a building plot in due course but at the moment is a haven for birds. There are the usual noises from nearby barking dogs and inconsiderate fellow guests but there are no neighbouring churches or mosques belting out over-amplified chanting in the early hours.

The wifi suffered when put under load but worked most of the time. The hotel has its own enormous (and quiet) generator for coping with frequent power cuts and this powers everything, not just the lights as in some hotels. The water supply is reliable and the hot water system works at all times.

There is no air conditioning but Addis is so high that it is hardly needed. If you open the windows towards dusk to cool things down, be prepared to spray for mosquitoes afterwards. There are no lifts, so if you have a room higher up, you will have to climb the stairs and, until you get used to the altitude, get puffed out doing so.

Cleaning staff were extremely thorough and kept the rooms in spotless condition. There is a good value laundry service which may take two or three days to return your clean clothes and sometimes needs chasing.

The staff are friendly and welcoming and the hotel lived up to its motto of a "home away from home". Recommended for a good value long stay.

Comfortable hotel
Pros:

Stayed at the Lion's Den Hotel for two nights. Family room was particularly good and, given the prices in Addis, extremely reasonable. Only cloud in the silver lining was having to walk up three flights of stairs. Good food as well and tastefully furnished rooms.

Really helpful manager
Pros:

Good, quiet location in Addis and the manager was incredibly helpful at giving us tips and organising us a good value driver for a day trip out to the Muger river gorge - which was highly recommended. The rooms are spacious, if not that modern, and the breakfast was really good - freshly cooked omelettes/scrambled eggs etc and lovely coffee. Saife the waiter was excellent, really friendly. We also had laundry done here which was very quick and reasonable price.

Landed lucky with this hotel
Pros:

Ok so my experience with this hotel started with them emailing me, asking when I was arriving at the airport so they could arrange a pick up for me. I had planned just to make my own way so this was a good start.
As It was an early morning flight, they were happy to look after my bags on arrival and I went off for a look about.
The rooms (I stayed in 2 different rooms, arriving and leaving Addis) were large, with a sitting area, bedroom and bathroom. Comfortable beds, nice restaurant/bar downstairs, and very friendly staff. A good location, pretty quiet at night, as I said I landed lucky with my first experience of an Ethiopian hotel.

Central location, Good value for money
Pros:

Nice lounge, excellent breakfast, spacious rooms, reliable shuttle (to and from airport - only ten mins or so away) and very helpful staff. Also arranged washing and baggage storage with minimum fuss. The manager organised a car and driver for our free day to go out to the Muger Gorge - $100 for three of us. Great experience. Easy walk to the Purple Café for excellent coffee and cakes. She also organised a trip for an authentic Ethiopian dining experience at the Abyssinian Foundation about 6 kms away. This was interesting but the service was poor (we waited over half an hour for the bill). Next time I think we'd just go across the road to the Greek Club!

Cosy, nice, good value for money!
Pros:

When travelling to Addis Ababa for business, I have been recommended to go to Intercontinental or other large four-star hotels and have been staying there, but never felt comfortable there. This time around, my colleague and I wanted to try something new. When we read that the Lion's Den aims to be Ethiopia's first boutique hotel, we were intrigued. Our stay was very pleasant: from the airport pickup to the spotless and spacious rooms, from the breakfast on order to the perfect hospitality of the staff.
Internet was not working properly for one day, but those of you who know Ethiopia will be aware that this has rarely anything to do with hotel infrastructure...
In sum, I highly recommend the Lion's Den for its good value for money for business travellers and tourists alike. It is located in the very center of Addis Ababa (Bole/Olympia area), yet very calm. Make sure to have dinner (moussaka and tzaziki) at the Greek Club just opposite!

Cheaper hotel out of the more comfortable options
Pros:

I wanted a comfortable hotel for the beginning and end of my stay in Ethiopia so I chose this one. The hot water was VERY reliable, which was a massive plus. The suite I had was 65 USD a night when I didn't reserve it through booking.com.

The location was pretty good, it was about a 10 minute walk from the north end of Bole Road.

I only found two drawbacks. One was the WiFi, which wasn't powerful enough to reach my room (it was fine when I used it in the restaurant, however). The other was the lack of mosquito net. Even though the malaria risk in Addis is low, I was bitten quite badly throughout the night, especially on my final night. Perhaps, I was just unlucky.

All in all, I'd stay here again if I came back to Addis.

Cozy and good value for money
Pros:

Good location, great deal of value for money relative to others, the staffs are good and friendly. The rooms are clean and have a separate sitting room with comfy couches and TV. I will definitely stay in this hotel on my next trip to Addis.

Very Nice and quite place to stay in Addis
Pros:

Stayed in their family room for two weeks and it was very clean, quiet with a very helpful staff. The rooms were nice and comfortable, the staff was always friendly and helpful and the location (right in front of the greek club) was excellent. Full service restaurant downstairs with reasonable prices. I would definitely stay there again. My only wish was that the hotel had an elevator since we stayed on the third floor and sometimes it gets tiring going up and down the stairs.

Home Away From HOME
Pros:

This Sloan is on the marquee in front of hotel. At first, I didn't pay much attention but as I stayed there it now means much more because it became my home away from home. The staff became my family in Addis; for they care about my well-being to making medicinal hot toddies made with Ethiopian ginger & honey for my cold to breakfast made to order. I got the royalty treatment. Whenever you go to Addis this hotel is the place to stay; for it's safe, clean and staff with loving and helpful people. Let it become your home away from home

Comfortable family room for good value
Pros:

We stayed in a family room which had 2 bedrooms for a good value. The location is good. There is a free shuttle to and from airport. The customer service was good. One morning we had to leave at 6am and they made breakfast for us before we went. The restaurant was good with included breakfast (chose off the menu). Wifi was good. The only downsides were the room's phone was broken so we couldn't call to the front desk and the safety deposit box didn't work and the shower in the bathroom was low water pressure. But we came back and would stay again. Friendly nice place with good price.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME!
Pros:

Ethiopia has been on my bucket list for quite some time now so I decided this year was the year for my family and I. I was looking for something affordable, cozy, and quiet. I found it all there. The hospitality was beyond words we all felt right at home. I was worried about my children who range from 16-27 but the hotel offered fun activities for them to attend during the day and suggested exciting nightlife nearby. My husband who is constantly working was able to relax and be connected with his business through their great wifi. Breakfast was included with the room which was a plus for me not having to worry about feeding everyone because their restaurant offered a great variety of food from traditional Ethiopian dishes to authentic american and jamaican food which was consistently full of flavor! They also had a shuttle service at our own convenience that took us sight seeing and shopping. The staff was very professional. Management was also very attentive to each guest I noticed they were on a first name basis with all their guests which impressed me. I highly recommend anyone traveling to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to stay at the Lion's Den hotel because it truly felt like home away from home.

Lion's Den is Family Friendly and Centrally Located
Pros:

My stay at Lion's Den was for several months so I got to know the owners and staff very well. The hotel is clean and well maintained. It is relatively new. The rooms are all suites with a kitchen, sitting/family/living room and door'ed bedroom. They have WiFI but can get slowed down if too many guests are on at the same time, but it is about as consistent as you can get in Addis. There are no elevators. They have ground plus 4 floors above so you have to get used to hiking the stairs in the high altitude for the upper rooms. TV is fixed for 5-7 channels which includes CNN, BBC, Dubai One and Fox Movies. Good enough for Addis as you should be out and about anyway. The Food is not bad when fresh. They have many jamaican dishes but most were cooked ahead of time and frozen. Breakfast is better than most and if you can order something cooked fresh it is fine. My preference for eating in that area is the Greek Club across the street that does a bustling business on daily basis.

A big benefit is the location as you are two blocks from the main Bole Road and across the main street is Dembell shopping center (Mall in the traditional sense) with lots to do. You are a short walk to several shopping structures. You are also about 4 blocks walk to Bambi's Supermarket that is Western-Traveler friendly.

Thumbs Up Lion's Den!!!

Everything perfect and professional
Pros:

All services where first level, the room (mini apartment) was clean and comfortable.
The shuttle to and from the airport was serious and responsible.
The internet did not work always good, but all Ethiopia has the same problem.
