InterContinental Guangzhou Exhibition Center by IHG

Stayed here for the Canton Fair and I must say it's a great way to enjoy the fair. Relatively close in distance with great service -- we came back from the fair via shuttle and was greeted with a performance and snacks at the lobby! The receptionists are also very helpful in receiving deliveries from Taobao. Would come back to stay!

It's been some time now that I used to go to this hotel during the Canton Fair time to support our business properly, with good quality accommodations, nice meals and close to the fairgrounds.
This time, I experienced a problem with my personal safebox that opened due to low battery of the safe, which is very risky as we store passports, money, and other valuable items.
Also would like to leave a note related to the food, which was much more restricted during breakfast time, as well as orders at the room service were of a so small quantity that it was scary.
When we pay over the average places, we expect consistency.
Hope you get my comments in a good way and use them to improve your services.

When my colleague and I arrived at the reception after our flight from Hangzhou and an hour-long taxi ride from the airport, the front desk staff were disorganized to say the least. There was no welcome, no greeting, no attempt to check us in. And, it is not as it was very busy. There was hardly anyone else there besides us. After we got their attention and informed them that we had reservations, they started the process of checking us in. This should not be the case in an IHG hotel, especially not in an Intercontinental!

Our experience in the Char restaurant was very mediocre. Service was slow or absent and again, it was not very busy. We left after we finished dinner and having waited for several minutes for someone to come and present the bill. After we left, I got a call and paid the bill. The prices were outrageous for the quality and quantity of food and drinks we consumed!

However, the Cafe Aqua was nice. We had buffet dinner twice and breakfast also twice. Nina was very helpful and friendly.

Among the other staff, the concierge Bale and Sing were both helpful.

Very good experience, walk into the lobby, the environment is very good, everyone is very warm, the service is very good, everyone's attention is very high, my family and I are very happy to eat here, I think they work very hard, but everyone is very good passion.

Cannot fault this hotel. I do not speak chinese at all and was"out of my depth" in China in many ways when I came to visit my son. This hotel made it so easy for me to manage and was a great safe haven for me. The service was very personal and staff anticipated my needs before I even asked remembering my coffee preferences and so forth. Facilities are beautiful , comfortable and very clean. The food is excellent and there is a variety of restaurants to choose from. The location is excellent. We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit Guangzhou.

This was my third time in this splendid hotel, with amazing staff and a great kitchen. It gives you all the comfort to work hard during the day and have a great rest at night. Very good gym area and pool to keep fit during the stay. Love it.

My honest review was quickly deleted from TripAdvisor — as if by sorcery.
The management team successfully destroyed a Black Diamond guest’s trust in under 10 minutes.

The CEO? Disappeared.
Like a politician avoiding drama — with even more elegance.

This place deserves to be a case study for hotel schools around the world:

“If you want to understand how it feels to be a guest whose emotions don’t matter… come stay here.”

As the cultural capital of Southern China, Guangzhou seamlessly blends historic tradition with modern innovation, from the scenic Baiyun Mountains and Pearl River to its dynamic culinary scene and growing urban economy.

The Setting: Pazhou Island and the InterContinental Experience

Pazhou, the eastern island district of Guangzhou, is a hub for international trade and innovation, home to corporate headquarters, exhibition centers, and the historic Huangpu Port. Nestled on the island’s edge, overlooking the iconic Canton Tower, stands the InterContinental Guangzhou Exhibition Center, sharing its modern tower with the Poly Development headquarters. Designed with business travelers in mind, especially those attending the Canton Fair, the hotel offers more than just convenience—it delivers thoughtful hospitality.

My Return Visit: A Stay With Purpose

Having visited before, I returned on June 23–24 to experience the hotel again amid a changing hospitality landscape. As part of my IHG Diamond Ambassador membership, I booked a one-night stay for just under ¥900 (~$125 USD) in a Classic Room, which was graciously upgraded to a 1 King Premium Tower Bath View Room.

A day before my arrival, I was personally contacted by Martha Roberts, possibly the only Argentine front office manager in IHG China—a familiar face who ensured every detail of my stay was arranged. Upon arrival, I was greeted not only by Martha but also by the General Manager, Bruno Bohl, who has brought seasoned leadership and a personal touch to the property. To my surprise, he even gifted me a plate of lychees he picked with his family—a gesture that set the tone for a deeply personal and memorable stay.

The Room: 1 King Premium Tower Bath View

Located in a corner of the building, Room 2917 offered sweeping 270-degree views of the Pearl River and Canton Tower. The 60 sqm room featured floor-to-ceiling windows, minimalist wood and marble interiors, a walk-in closet, and a tranquil bathtub with views that capture the spirit of the riverfront. The bathroom was well-equipped, with a shift from the usual Byredo products to local Calmac amenities—a refreshing touch.

Club InterContinental: Lounge Above the Clouds

Thanks to my IHG Milestone Rewards, I enjoyed access to Club InterContinental on the 39th floor—a refined lounge with panoramic views, elegant furnishings, and a calm atmosphere. Led by Claire He, the lounge team delivered exceptional service across breakfast, afternoon tea, and happy hour. It’s also a great setting for private meetings or simply soaking in the city skyline.

Dining: A Culinary Highlight

The hotel boasts three main dining options:

CHAR Restaurant – A Michelin-guide steakhouse with a dramatic minimalist design. Highlights include the USDA Prime Ribeye and open kitchen concept. CHAR also has a sister location at Hotel Indigo Shanghai, famed by “Max the Meat Guy.”

Canal Luna – A celebration of Cantonese tradition, offering refined local dishes crafted by a master chef. Ideal for those seeking authentic regional cuisine.

Café Aqua – The all-day buffet offers everything from fresh seafood and international fare to Cantonese specialties. A vibrant and inclusive dining space for hotel guests and locals alike.

I took advantage of the 618 Sale, similar to Double 11, with excellent value F&B packages:

Café Aqua Semi-Buffet Lunch (¥168/$24): Featuring main dishes like curry chicken and steak, with a side buffet of seafood, sushi, and salads—prepared by the veteran Winson Wang.

Canal Luna Dim Sum Set (¥138/$20): A traditional Cantonese dim sum menu including shrimp dumplings, wonton noodles, and mango sago. A complimentary dessert voucher made it even sweeter.

Breakfast at Café Aqua: A broad selection from Western classics and dim sum to Lanzhou noodles, fresh juices, and even milkshakes and ice cream. I enjoyed breakfast with Bruno and was warmly attended by Winson and F&B Director Victoria Li. For a quieter option, the Club Lounge provides à la carte selections with stunning morning views.

Facilities: An Exceptional Pool Experience

The swimming pool is among the best in any Guangdong hotel—spacious, clean, and well-equipped with thoughtful extras like a high-speed dryer, sauna, and top-tier locker rooms.

Final Thoughts: Service Defines the Stay

This was my 7th visit, and it ended on a high note—a group photo with the team I’ve come to know and appreciate: Bruno, Martha, Claire, Winson, and Victoria. One absence stood out—Catty Chen, the new Director of Rooms, who had long been a key figure during my early visits and helped establish the relationships that keep me coming back.

To me, the essence of a great hotel lies not only in its architecture or amenities, but in the genuine service and passion of its team. The warmth, attentiveness, and heart shown here are what make this property exceptional.

Verdict:

Without a doubt, this is the best IHG property in Guangdong Province, and personally, my favorite among all IHG hotels. If you’re visiting Guangzhou—whether for business or leisure—this hotel is worth every yuan. Treat the staff with kindness, and you’ll experience hospitality at its finest.

Perfect hotel, thanks especially to the woman from Argentina who was managing it. Very accommodating and reasonable, and gave me a free upgrade, which I really appreciated it. Truly a luxury hotel.

We had a very nice stay at the IC Guangzhou. The rooms were very modern, clean and spacious. Importantly, they have excellent labelling of food allergens which is uncommon in China. We really appreciated the effort they took to cater to my son’s food allergies. The staff were so helpful.

I would definitely stay again.

I stayed at InterContinental GuangZhou Exhibition Centre (located in PaZhou)recently and the customer service was exceptional. This is why the IHG will always be my first choice when travelling abroad. I would like to specially mention the staff working at the executive lounge. They were very welcoming and the management there was amazing. The staff there are truly very valuable assets to InterContinental GuangZhou Exhibition Centre and I would definitely recommend this hotel to others coming in the future.

This hotel truly stands out with its impressive cleanliness and outstanding facilities. Our room offers a fantastic view of the Canton Tower, which is simply breathtaking. However, it is slightly far from the shopping and dining areas.

Of all the club lounges we've been to, Claire - manager of the club lounge, gave us such a warm, accomodating and fantastic service! We felt like we were at a 6 star resort. She truly went above and beyond for our requests and was very proactive in fulfilling all our requests. We also had this unusual request to go to Shunde, she promptly connected us to Golden Key concierge Bale Mo. Bale Mo recommended us amazing famous local places to visit in Shunde. We were able to make a day trip there on a Didi and eat all the good food around Shunde without a guide! :D Thank you Claire and Bale for making our stay in Guangzhou so enjoyable!

Absolutely great experience in InterContinental Guangzho Exhibition Center. Very stylish hotel, upgrade to a fantastic suite. Perfect InterContinental Club on the 39th floor with amazing views.
But the real gem of the InterContinental and the Club is miss Claire He. She made our stay very comfortable and always helped with any questions about city and hotel. Here smile made each day in the Club fantastic. Brilliant on the IC staff.
