地名がまさに『琥珀』。バルト海沿岸の名産品の主産地のひとつ。
Pros:

ワールドカップ観戦でカリーニングラード市内のホテルが確保できず、空港からも市内からも３５キロほど離れたここを予約した。空港からの交通はタクシーしかなさそうで、空港の正規のカウンターでタクシーチケットを買うと、ホテルまでわずか６３０ルーブル（１２００円）ほどしかしなかった。空港からはすぐハイウェイで両側は行けども行けども荒涼とした背の高い草原が続く。ここは、第二次大戦後ロシアがドイツから割譲したところだが、日本からの中・北千島と同様、人がほとんど住んでいない。決められたチェックインの時間よりも前に行ったにもかかわらず、すぐに手続きをとってくれて、部屋に入れた。このホテルの周りの状況をしらべてみると、人口１０００人にも満たないような小さな村であるようだ。着いた翌朝朝飯前に本格的に村の探検に出た。ホテルの裏手はホテルの名前と同じベッカーの林。その先はバルト海でこの州（ロシアの飛び地カリーニングラード州）を代表するビーチだ。しかし、この日（６月下旬）は気温１０度ほどで、まだ海開きできる状態ではない。今回のワールドカップ開催地の中では飛び抜けて涼しいところだ（しかし寒くはなかった）。次に道を挟んで反対の内陸に向かって探索する。地図を見ると鉄道があるので、駅はないかと探す。街の中心部に立地するにもかかわらず、道路上にある案内図には載っていない。『鉄道通り』という名の道があったのでその道沿いにどんどん進むが、どんどん市街地から離れていく。琥珀工場の横を過ぎると、途中から掘り込んだ地形が近づいてきてやがて平行になる。きっとその底が鉄道なのだろう。跨線橋が先に見えるのでそこに行けばわかると思い先を急ぐ。しかし、そこにあったのは枕木を外された廃線跡だった。引き返すと、琥珀工場は出勤時間で次から次へと労働者が来る。おそらく村の基幹産業なのだろう。ホテルの人の話では、結局カリーニングラードへはバスで行くしかないそうだ。バス停には近郊のバスの時刻しか載っていなかったが、ホテルの人がバス会社に時刻を訊いてくれて、だいたい１時間に一本便があることがわかった。カリーニングラードバスターミナルまで１１７ルーブル。信じられないくらい安い。帰りは向こう発が午後９時台が最後なので、試合終了後は間に合わない。試合会場付近は交通規制のため北駅まで歩き、客待ちしているタクシーを拾うが、３０００ルーブル（６０００円）とそれほど高くない。最終日、飛行機の時間にぎりぎりにはなるが、村の琥珀博物館を見ようとバスの時間を一本遅らせた。ホテルのバイキングが８：００〜１０：００で、寝坊して９：３０ころ食べて、ホテルをチェックアウトして、急いで博物館に行った。１０：５５だ。バスは１１：０５なのでぎりぎりだ。ところが、１０：００から開館のはずなのに、ちょうど係員が出勤してきたところで、まだ開館前だという。話が合わないが、こちらは時間がないので無理に開けてもらう。小さな博物館なので、ものの５分もあれば全部見れる。しかし、来る途中１０：００営業開始の店や施設がどこも閉まっていたので、もしやと思い自分の電波腕時計を確かめると、知らない間に夏時間になっている。夏時間の設定をオート（自動）にしていたが、前日はきちんと冬時間だった。考えられる原因は、ここがロシアの飛び地の小さい地域なので、周辺の国（ポーランド、リトアニア）の影響を受けて、そちらの設定の自動的に切り替わってしまったことだ。なお、空港への直通バスはなく、カリーニングラードのバスターミナル（アウトバグザール）で乗り換えなければならない。
