SCATTERED THUNDERSHOWERS OR RAIN EXPECTED

The entire country.
Severity: Moderate Urgency: Expected

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism through the Department of Meteorological Services wishes to inform the public of the expected scattered thundershowers over North East on the 20th March 2026. From 21st March 2026 we expect these scattered thundershowers over South East, Kgatleng, Central, North East and Chobe. On the 22nd we still expect scattered thundershowers over Ngamiland, Ghanzi, Southern, South east, Kgatleng and Kweneng districts. More over these scattered thundershowers will extend over Ghanzi, Kgalagadi and Southern on the 23rd March 2026. Due to these expected heavy rainfalls of 50mm or more, there is a potential of flash floods in some areas. These wet conditions are caused by the continued influx of moisture from the tropics (the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)) and medium-level instability over the country. Torrential downpours have already caused saturated soils leading to significant water accumulation in low-lying areas.

Considering the expected scattered rains, the public is advised to take the precautionary measures to stay safe from the likely impacts of the conditions. Precautionary measures include moving to higher ground immediately if you are in a flood prone area and avoiding driving through floodwaters. The Department of Meteorological Services will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds and will provide updates when the need arises.

Event: flash flood Certainty: Likely Category: Met
