The location was chosen in the valley surrounded by the thick forest, since it is known that a Catholic nunnery existed in the spot of the actual church before the arrival of the Teutonic knights in the area. In 1689, the overwhelming fire destroyed several parts of the town, and highly damaged the church, the roof being caught in the fire and fell over the floor, leaving a heavy cloud of ash.
