Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Europe, a granite island rising from a vast tidal bay on the border of Normandy and Brittany. On this self-guided walking tour, you'll trace its story from a 708 AD vision of the Archangel Michael to a medieval fortress that never fell to the English. You'll also discover how the same tides that inspired centuries of pilgrimage nearly swallowed the island entirely – and how a major engineering project brought it back.
The tour begins at La Ferme Saint-Michel, a former sheepfold-turned-restaurant at the edge of the bay. Walking toward the Mont along the Couesnon River, you'll learn how 19th-century polders – farmland reclaimed from the sea – slowly silted up the bay, and how a purpose-built dam now flushes out accumulated sediment to restore the island's maritime isolation.
