This tour follows the Danube from its wide plains into the most dramatic part of the Iron Gates Gorge, revealing how the landscape changes along the way.
You visit Golubac Fortress, dramatically positioned above the river, and Lepenski Vir, one of the oldest settlements in Europe, where prehistoric houses still face the Danube.
Highlights:
✅ Iron Gates day trip from Belgrade: A one-day route covering the key sights of the gorge, with return to the city the same evening.
✅ Golubac Fortress at the gateway to the gorge: A medieval stronghold marking the entrance to the Iron Gates and explaining the strategic importance of the Danube corridor.
✅ Lepenski Vir – one of Europe’s oldest settlements: A unique prehistoric site showing how early communities lived along the Danube around 8000 BC.
✅ Deeper access into the Iron Gates Gorge: The tour reaches the Kazan section (Mali and Veliki Kazan), the narrowest and most impressive part of the Danube — deeper than most standard day tours.

The first stop is Golubac Fortress, a 13th-century fortress at the entrance to the Iron Gates Gorge. Set right above the Danube, it marks the point where the river begins to narrow. Once a key strategic stronghold, it controlled an important passage along the Danube. During the visit, your guide shares the historical context and explains its role through different periods. Note: The fortress is closed on Mondays. On those days, the stop is limited to a short photo stop from the road.
Next is Lepenski Vir, one of the oldest known settlements in Europe, dating back to around 8000 BC. Located on the banks of the Danube, it offers insight into how prehistoric communities lived in close connection with the river. Inside the modern visitor center, you can see the remains of distinctive trapezoidal houses and unique stone sculptures that define this early Danube culture.
The drive continues through Iron Gates National Park toward the Kazan viewpoints, the most attractive and dramatic part of the Danube Gorge. Here, the river narrows between steep limestone cliffs, forming the striking sections known as Mali Kazan and Veliki Kazan. This tour goes deeper into the gorge than most similar tours, reaching its most impressive viewpoints. From here, you can see the Danube at its narrowest point, with Romania just across the water.
After the sightseeing, you’ll stop for lunch at a small local eco-village on the banks of the Danube. A set menu of traditional regional dishes is typically served, offering a relaxed break by the river. After lunch, the return drive to Belgrade begins, with arrival in the early evening. The usual drop-off time is around 7 pm.
