In Cartagena, coconuts become more than just food — they transform into art with purpose. Meet the DAMARTES (Ladies and Mothers of Art), a collective of seven resilient women from La Boquilla who’ve been crafting stunning coconut-based jewelry, accessories, and home décor since 2008.

Born from a workshop initiated by the Proboquilla Foundation, this project empowered these women — mothers and grandmothers — to break free from traditional roles and build independent livelihoods through creativity and solidarity.

With the continued support of Alternative Travel, DAMARTES has become a symbol of strength, sisterhood, and sustainable craftsmanship. When you visit, you'll be welcomed into their seaside workshop, nestled in a cozy rustic restaurant.

Here, you’ll hear their inspiring stories and craft your own handmade souvenir — a bracelet, necklace, keychain, or keepsake — while directly supporting their journey. It’s more than a workshop; it’s a heartwarming cultural exchange.

What to expect

Create your own souvenir while supporting a noble cause. In Cartagena, coconuts go beyond culinary use to become unique crafts. The DAMARTES project (Ladies and Mothers of Art), originally named "Head-of-household mothers and their coconuts," is a microenterprise formed by seven women who, since 2008, have turned coconuts into jewelry, vases, containers, belts, and accessories, thanks to a craft workshop sponsored by the Proboquilla Foundation.

These pioneers from La Boquilla have set a milestone by being the first to generate their own income, emancipating themselves from machismo through art. With the support of Alternative Travel, the coconut workshop has evolved towards success over the last decade.

The DAMARTES, mothers and grandmothers, share their stories with pride, showcasing how female solidarity has strengthened them. Upon visiting La Boquilla, you will be invited to an exclusive and authentic workshop, held in a charming rustic restaurant by the sea. After a warm welcome, you will have the chance to create your personal keepsake while contributing to this project with love. Make your own bracelet, keychain, necklace, or other souvenir with the DAMARTES.
