The Central Railway Building (CRB) in Chattogram is a historic landmark that dates back to the British colonial era. Completed in 1872, it originally served as the headquarters of the Assam‑Bengal Railway. Set atop a scenic, tree-covered hill, CRB stands out with its striking red façade and grand colonial-style architecture. Its south-facing façade stretches about 360 feet and features a large central porte-cochère (arched carriage porch) as well as semi-octagonal towers at each end. Today, the building houses the headquarters of the East Zone of Bangladesh Railway. Surrounded by lush greenery, old trees, and open grounds, CRB is often regarded as the “lungs of Chattogram” — a peaceful green oasis in the busy port city. Over time, CRB has evolved beyond its administrative role to become a cultural and heritage icon: a place where visitors come not only for its historical significance, but also for its natural beauty and colonial-era charm.
