Though much of Pharaoh Amenhotep III’s once-grand memorial temple has vanished, the two towering Colossi of Memnon still stand guard over 3,400 years later. Located on the Nile’s edge near Luxor, these massive statues continue to awe visitors. Alongside the twin figures, travelers can spot smaller statues of the Pharaoh’s wife, Tiy, and his mother, Mutemwia, as well as examine sandstone carvings depicting the Nile god Hapy. Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari
The magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari stands as one of the ancient world’s most remarkable funerary monuments, rivaling even the Pyramids. Carved into the cliffs that overlook the Valley of the Kings, the temple rises on three grand terraces connected by ramps, each lined with rows of imposing square pillars. Dedicated to one of Egypt’s rare female pharaohs, Hatshepsut proudly called her monument the “Splendor of Splendors.” While much of the construction traces back to earlier rulers like Mentuhotep II (2050 BC), the temple’s design remains strikingly monolithic, enhanced by the loss of many statues and sphinxes over time.
