Esna is located about 33 miles (53 km) south of Luxor. Boats travelling between Luxor and Edfu must pass through the Esna Lock. It will be between 9 pm and dark or it depends on the sailing boat itinerary when the Nile cruise ship arrive but that didn’t stop us from heading to the top deck for a photo op. Two riverboats can fit into the lock at the same time. The process of filling and emptying the lock is fast (maybe 5-6 minutes); most of the time is spent waiting for your turn to enter the lock and getting the boats in position. Lunch and dinner on board.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast any time before 10 a.m. as your ship sails the tranquil Nile to Edfu: you'll disembark at noon to explore the massive facade and echoing halls of the Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon-headed god, Horus. At 2:30 p.m., enjoy a late lunch and the leisurely cruise to Kom Ombo. Afternoon tea is at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 8 p.m. After dinner, enjoy a Nile cruise classic: the galabeya party, where everyone dons traditional Egyptian galabeya gowns.
The last full day of your cruise is action-packed, beginning with a 6 a.m. wakeup call for breakfast and a 7 a.m. tour of Kom Ombo temple, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus. By 8 a.m., you're back on board for the journey to Aswan, the tranquil Nile-side city that's the capital of Nubian culture. After an early lunch, disembark at 1:30 p.m. for a tour of Aswan's highlights: the High Dam that stopped the Nile flooding, the granite quarries with their Unfinished Obelisk, and the Temple of Philae on an island in the Nile. Afternoon tea is at 5 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 p.m. After dinner, immerse in Nubian culture with a Nubian folklore show.
