To protect the city, Saladin ordered the construction of a citadel in the mountains of Al Moqattam serve as fortress of the royal residence. The construction began in 1176. For this purpose, they demolished the Fatimid mosques and tombs of the places that occupy the great walls. Some blocks of stone from the Pyramids of Giza were used for construction.

    Cairo Citadel

    Built in the twelfth century, the Citadel of Saladin is a place with a past full of momentous historical events for the current future of Egypt. Its walls and superb location make it one of the most wonderful and entertaining tours of Cairo. At the top of the hill sits Citadel of Saladin, which owes its name to the constructor of its eastern wall, Salah Eddin Al-Ayoubi. His arrival in the country, in 1171, involved the abolition of power Fatimid and the restoration of Islam as the official religion of Egypt. Every 100 meters with communication towers built with the walls. Served the dual purpose of allowing light to enter through the openings as a sector to bet a guard that defended the city with arrows. The two main towers, both on the northeast corner, are known as Borg Al-tower Ramiah and Borg Al-Arena-Hattad Smith Tower.
