The Hanging Church
The Hanging Church, located in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo), is named for its unique position above a gatehouse of the ancient Babylon Fortress. Its nave is suspended over a passageway, giving the church its distinctive “hanging” appearance. Accessed by 29 steps, it was once nicknamed “The Staircase Church” by early travelers. Over the centuries, the ground level has risen by about six meters since the Roman era, causing much of the fortress tower beneath it to be buried and subtly reducing the dramatic effect of its elevated structure.
